General : The Borresen Z5 Cryo is the largest speaker in the Z-series from Borresen Acoustics. The Borresen Z5 Cryo is a large 2.5-way floor-standing speaker. The Z-series from Børresen Acoustics is more affordable than the more expensive 0-series, yet no compromises have been made on quality. The tweeter and drivers are the same units as in the 0-series from Børresen Acoustics. They only have a different drive system and suspension.

Technology : The Borresen Z5 Cryo has a very well thought-out design. The black baffle is made of MDF and features a clean, screwless design. Where the 0-series from Borresen Acoustics are horn-shaped, the Z-series are square with rounded corners. The cabinet is extremely solid and sturdy, these speakers weigh no less than 75 kg each. The drivers and crossovers are manufactured by Borresen themselves. The drivers and tweeter used are unique. The dipole planar tweeter is made from a special type of foil and has a moving mass of just 0.01 grams and is driven by a fast and super powerful Super-Neodymium N52 magnet. This tweeter sits in its own compartment and is vented through a port on the rear, allowing the tweeter to hang freely in the room without suffering from pressure buildup in the cabinet. The four 8" and two 4.5" cones consist of a 4 millimeter thick 'Nomex Core' design with two layers of non-woven carbon fiber from the Japanese manufacturer 'Toray', a high-tech manufacturer that also makes parts for Formula 1 cars and the space industry, with an aramid honeycomb core between the carbon layers for reinforcement. Just like the tweeter, the cones are driven by powerful Neodymium N52 magnets. The combination of both a light moving mass and a powerful N52 Neodymium drive system results in extremely fast acceleration of the units, providing an exceptionally fast and accurate output. The materials used result in extremely low self-inductance, which in turn results in minimal distortion or resonance. The Borresen Z5 Cryo is an open system, but due to the clever use of diffusers at the bass ports, the bass ports do not emit large sound waves with much energy towards the wall. Instead, the sound waves are broken up and reduced, resulting in reduced energy output from the bass ports. This allows you to place the Borresen Z5 Cryo approximately 65-80cm from the rear wall without the bass resonating or dominating. Although a bit of extra space is often desired for optimal sound quality.

Listening : The Borresen Z5 Cryo sounds like no other speaker in its price range. So controlled, so spatial and so refined and free of resonance, at any volume. It immediately becomes clear that we are dealing with a very special speaker. The output is very precise and realistic, yet at the same time there is an enormous sense of calm throughout. You are immediately placed in the room where the performers are playing, whether it's a small studio or a large hall or even a stadium. The Borresen Z5 Cryo captures the atmosphere very precisely. The Borresen Z5 Cryo can play quite loud, and even at the highest volumes the sound image remains stable and not unpleasant to listen to. In addition to high volumes, you can of course also perform very well at low volumes with the Borresen Z5 Cryo. Due to the very low moving mass of the ultra-light tweeter and drivers, even with quiet music at room volume you will hear every detail clearly and see a spatial image. The Borresen Z5 Cryo is a speaker you will most likely never want to part with. Unless the 0-series from Borresen Acoustics comes within reach. Simply everything is present, dynamics, speed, rhythm, spatiality and above all peace. What more could one want?

Cryo Version : This Borresen Z5 set is the optional Cryo version. This means that all metal parts are cryogenically treated. So the baskets of the drivers, the magnet system and the internal wiring. Borresen Acoustics performs the cryogenic treatment of the metal parts in-house and in their own way. The cryogenic treatment of the metal parts is a process that takes a total of 3 days. In the first 24 hours, the metal parts are cooled to -196° Celsius temperatures. During the following 24 hours, the temperature is kept constant at around -196° Celsius. During the 24 hours that follow, the temperature of the metal parts is gradually brought back to room temperature. The gradual cooling and warming of the metal parts is crucial to prevent thermal stress in the metal. Cryogenic treatment of the metal parts compresses and strengthens the metal structure and reduces the residual stress in the metal that normally occurs when metal transitions from its liquid phase to a solid phase. The result of cryogenic treatment of the metal parts is that conductivity increases by around 6-8%, while inductance decreases, which in turn results in faster, freer and more transparent sound reproduction. This is a clearly audible improvement compared to the already excellent standard version of the Borresen Z5.
