Magnepan speakers are different from "normal" speakers. You can see it immediately. Each Magnepan is only a few centimeters deep. As flat as a record, so to speak. With a normal speaker, you first see a cabinet with contents. Air. On the front side, the units that produce the sound are usually screwed on. The cones of the units move forward and backward, happily following the music. The sound that the units radiate forward is what we want to hear. The sound they radiate into the cabinet is just as strong as the sound they radiate into the room, but we can't do much with that. At best, a carefully designed bass reflex system or transmission line can generate some extra bass, but the rest has to be dampened. Destroyed. Converted into heat. Of course, this causes distortions and vibrating cabinet walls. It is no coincidence that dynamic speakers nowadays are equipped with sturdy and very heavy cabinets, but 100% resonance-free will never be achieved.
Magnepan 3.7i
A Magnepan is different. A Magnepan has no cabinet. Period. A Magnepan consists of a large driver in a frame, and is open at the front and back. Magnepan speakers therefore have no form of cabinet coloration, because the cabinet simply doesn't exist. What doesn't exist cannot color or distort.
A Magnepan also has no ordinary drivers. An ordinary driver, like a woofer, midrange or tweeter. Ordinary dynamic drivers always consist of a moving surface, the cone or dome, and this is always driven by a coil, the voice coil. Usually a round tube with copper wire that moves back and forth in a magnetic field, the air gap in the magnet. Of course, the cone or dome is only driven at a single point, and the cone or dome hopefully remains intact in its operation. Unfortunately, that is never the case. Every cone or dome exhibits its own vibrations which, like the cabinet walls, cause coloration. Fortunately, nowadays you can buy extremely good speakers, with extremely good cabinets and drivers, and they can sound very good, but Magnepan simply does it differently.
Apart from "no cabinet", Magnepans actually have no drivers either. What moves is essentially the voice coil itself. Magnepan takes a large piece of special Mylar foil with an extremely long lifespan. On this foil, Magnepan attaches thin wires and ribbons for the different frequency ranges. The foil is driven directly by the wires that sit in a large magnetic field. Behind the foil, a large magnetic field is created by many long permanent magnets. So there is no cone that can distort, so the coloration of Magnepan speakers is extremely low. Some models are also equipped with a true ribbon tweeter, a speaker high ribbon, without Mylar foil. A pure ribbon, and this ribbon tweeter is known as the best tweeter in the world.

Magnepans are 2-way or 3-way speakers, and the associated necessary filters are built into the frame in the current models. Built with exclusively top-quality components. The speaker connection is a locking banana plug connection. Simply plug in and tighten, and a perfect connection is made.

Magnepans sound different. Different from ordinary dynamic speakers. The first thing you notice is the appearance of the Magnepans. Large and flat. Because a Magnepan is open at the front and back, it radiates forward and backward. For good bass reproduction, you need some size, otherwise the built-up bass pressure at the front disappears directly to the back. Magnepans are therefore quite large, but fortunately Magnepan also makes more compact models. The second thing you notice is the sound quality. The Magnepans sound incredibly "real". Very clean without a trace of distortion. Even when you play music very softly, you still hear everything. The bass reproduction itself is also very pure and clean. Not comparable to the booming bass of some speakers. True Magnepan lovers can actually no longer listen to an ordinary dynamic speaker, except for very good speakers. That's how good the Magnepans are.
