General: The Magnepan 2.7 is Magnepan's latest creation. It is a model positioned between the smaller MG1.7 and the larger MG 3.7. This is the i-version, the slightly more relaxed-sounding version of the upgraded 2.7x.

Technology: The Magnepan 2.7i is a 3-way floor-standing magnetostatic loudspeaker. It stands 180cm tall, but is considerably narrower than its larger brother, the Magnepan 3.7i/3.7X. The Magnepan 2.7i uses, like the larger Magnepan models, a true ribbon tweeter for the high frequencies. The pure ribbon is not a ribbon glued to mylar film, but a pure ribbon suspended freely in the air. This makes it much lighter, and therefore faster and more precise. This truly sets it apart from the MG1.7i and others. Now people without the space for a large and wide MG3.7 or MG20.7 can also enjoy the best high frequencies that Magnepan has to offer.

Listening: The new Magnepan 2.7i is a very special loudspeaker with a familiar sound. This new 2.7i sounds like a 3.7i, but with slightly lighter and faster bass reproduction. For orchestral power, the 3.7i certainly goes a bit further, but the difference is not huge. The bass reproduction is enormously tight and musical. What is also appreciated is that the Magnepan 2.7i does not attempt more bass than is possible from its panel. As a result, the bass reproduction is always balanced and never becomes muddy. The midtones and high frequencies are fantastic, and the air around the instruments is excellent. It is quite remarkable how easily the Magnepan 2.7i places music in the room and how clean, intelligible and resonance-free everything sounds. Not only does the sound work technically very well, it is also highly musical—sitting still during listening is a difficult task with this new Magnepan 2.7i. The Magnepan 2.7i can be described as a slightly more relaxed-sounding 2.7x. The 2.7x goes further in definition, openness and dynamics. Ohm-Audio B.V. has both on hand so they can be compared.
