General: The Sonus Faber Lumina I is the smallest speaker from Sonus Faber, but it possesses great qualities.

Technology: The Sonus Faber Lumina I is finished to the highest standard of Sonus Faber. Only natural materials are used for the cabinet and the units. The cabinet itself is a small, square enclosure finished on all sides with genuine leather. The front is available in various finishes, namely high-gloss black, or genuine wood veneer in dark Wenge or the lighter Walnut finish. Both the tweeter and woofer are made of natural materials; the 4 inch woofer is made of paper composite and the tweeter is an iconic D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) 29mm Kurtmüller silk dome tweeter which is also used in the higher Sonetto series of Sonus Faber. Around both the tweeter and woofer is a soft material that reduces radiation to the sides, with a beautiful chrome ring around it which is purely for design purposes. The whole thing simply looks stunning. The bass reflex port of the Sonus Faber Lumina I is located on the front, which makes the Sonus Faber Lumina I very easy to place, even if you position them close to the back wall.

Listening: The Sonus Faber Lumina I is a very special small speaker, in terms of size not much larger than an average shoebox, yet it manages to fill the room in a very high-quality way with music. The bass is also many times better than you would expect from a speaker of this size. You really hear the Sonus Faber character come through in the Lumina I. This means you get a beautiful and spacious soundstage, with naturally sounding voices and instruments with lightly warm undertones. The Sonus Faber Lumina I is also rhythmically very good; the sound is fast and open and all details are clearly audible and the separation of multiple voices or instruments is also very clear. In short, the Sonus Faber Lumina I articulates excellently and lets you enjoy the entire recording and everything that happens in it. The Sonus Faber Lumina I sounds exciting, engaging and intriguing without ever crossing the irritation threshold or causing listening fatigue.

Conclusion: The Sonus Faber Lumina I is, as the reviewers say: "a wolf in sheep's clothing". And that's exactly what it is. Don't base your opinion on the small size of the Sonus Faber Lumina I, but instead come and listen to the impressive sound these special compact monitors can deliver. For the money you pay for these hand-built Italian speakers, there is little to no competition with similar, let alone better, performance. The Sonus Faber Lumina I is very suitable for use as a stereo set, but they can also be used excellently in surround setups.
