General: The Platina series is the best series of equipment that the British brand Quad has to offer. The equipment in the Platina series is larger, heavier, more powerful and even better finished than the already excellent retro 3-series and the modern Artera series from Quad. The Quad Platina series consists of 3 devices: the Quad Platina Integrated integrated amplifier with built-in DAC, the Quad Platina Stream network player with digital and analog outputs (both fixed and variable) and finally the Quad Platina CDT digital CD transport.

Technology: The Quad Platina Stream is a very robustly built device. The housing is extremely solidly constructed and internally only high-quality components are used with a generous linear power supply featuring a large ring core transformer. The Quad Platina Stream weighs no less than 11.8 kg, which is not light for a network player. In addition to being a high-quality network player/streamer, the Quad Platina Stream is also a very versatile device. It features an excellent ESS Sabre ES9038PRO DAC with both balanced and unbalanced analog outputs. These analog outputs can be set to fixed or variable; if you set them to fixed, the Quad Platina Stream is an excellent streamer/DAC to connect to an integrated amplifier or preamplifier. But if you set the analog outputs to variable, the Quad Platina Stream can also be used as a preamplifier and you only need to connect a power amplifier to it. The Quad Platina Stream has 1 digital input, which is a USB-B input where you can play all PCM formats up to high res 32bit/768kHz and also DSD formats up to DSD512. Ideal for people with a large music collection who want to play from an external server or PC via USB. This way you can practically play all digital formats via the DAC in the Platina Stream. Additionally, the Quad Platina Stream also has SPDIF Coax RCA and Toslink Optical digital outputs for people who want to play with an external DAC. However, you would need a very good DAC to achieve better results than the excellent DAC built into the Quad Platina Stream.

Streaming: The Quad Platina Stream can be used in multiple ways to stream your music. First, there is the Quad Platina Stream app, a convenient and comprehensive app where you can log in with your Tidal or Qobuz account, and for internet radio you can log in with your TuneIn account. For an even easier and more direct way to play, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect and Spotify Connect are also possible. Playing via Airplay 2 from iOS devices is also very easy. What is also convenient is that the Quad Platina Stream is also Roon Ready certified for playing from a Roon Server. The Quad Platina Stream also runs on UPnP protocols, allowing you to use third-party software such as MConnect, BubbleUPnP or JPlay, or use the Quad Platina Stream as a player behind an Audirvana server. Finally, playing via Plex Media Server is also possible on the Quad Platina Stream. So there is something for everyone when it comes to the software to control the Quad Platina Stream. For people with stored music that is not on a server, the Quad Platina Stream also has a USB-A input for USB sticks and USB SSD or HDD storage.

Sound: The Quad Platina Stream clearly distinguishes itself from the already excellent but more affordable 3-series and Artera series from Quad. Not only in build quality and size, but sonically this Quad Platina Stream goes much further in terms of spatiality, detail, musicality and dynamics. The presented soundstage is enormous and refined, and the placement of what happens in the soundstage feels natural and realistic. The music is presented tangibly and engagingly and the layers in the recording are clearly heard in a pleasant way. The bass has a detailed but slightly rounded character that provides natural and pleasant bass reproduction; this bass is well present but never unnaturally dominant. The sound is simply complete, everything included, without flaws. Not too much of anything and not too little of anything. Not only the build quality and durability, but also the musicality and fun factor makes the Quad Platina Stream an ideal, versatile and very musical option with an excellent price-to-quality ratio.
