General: 2-Way Full Range Ribbon Speakers
Technical Details: The Analysis Audio Epsilon is the larger sibling of the Omicron, the smallest speaker from Analysis Audio of Greece. The Epsilon has been completely redesigned and now features Single Wiring input and the crossover filter has been modified. Like all other Analysis Audio speakers, the Epsilon is a 2-way speaker with a very low crossover point for the tweeter. From 650 Hz onwards, the super-fast ribbon midrange/tweeter takes over from the ribbon woofer/midrange unit. There is no filtering in the sensitive area around 2500 Hertz as is customary in a 2-way speaker. The filter itself is a 6dB filter with minimal components and minimal phase shift in the crossover region. The impedance of the Epsilon is around 5 ohms and is very flat, making it an easy load for the amplifier used. The tweeter itself is a true masterpiece. It is a 105cm long and almost 4cm wide pure ribbon, encased in Kapton. Ribbons are known for being super-fast, transparent and uncolored sounding, and this ribbon midrange/tweeter of the Epsilon is among the best we have ever heard. In normal dome tweeters, the dome is driven at the edge and all forces distribute through the membrane. This is not the case with the Epsilon ribbon. The membrane is driven over its entire surface. The same is true for the bass/midpanel. Normal woofers and midrange drivers are usually driven forcefully in the center with a voice coil, which creates stress in the cones. Not so with Analysis Audio. In fact, both membranes of all Analysis Audio speakers are the voice coil themselves, so no cones or domes are driven at all. The woofer panel itself is also a ribbon, but the panel here is trapezoidal. This is special and avoids resonances and standing waves in the foil. What is even more special is that the woofer/midrange ribbon is not stretched tightly in the frame, but is suspended from a kind of rubber surround. The panel can thus move very freely, and the Epsilon can therefore reproduce particularly deep bass. The Epsilon is relatively compact, but clearly larger than the Omicron, and measures 132cm high by 61cm wide and 6cm deep. The sensitivity is certainly adequate at 86dB, and the Epsilon plays sublimely with amplifiers from around 2 x 50 Watts, but we recommend a somewhat more powerful amplifier for the Epsilon. The maximum power handling of the Epsilon is 250 watts, so the Epsilon can also play quite loudly, though this is not necessary, because due to its direct radiation, the entire music reproduction is fully rendered even at lower volumes. The Analysis Audio Epsilon is a High End ribbon speaker from Analysis Audio in the higher segment and it sounds fantastic, like the other speakers from this manufacturer.
Listening Impressions: The Analysis Audio Epsilon is clearly a larger sibling of the Omicron. The Epsilon essentially sounds the same, but the Epsilon clearly plays deeper in the bass, the soundstage is somewhat larger and the Epsilon can generally play louder more easily. Out of the box, the new Epsilon already sounds excellent, but it is clear that these ribbon speakers need some break-in, like any other high-end speaker. After 100 hours of play, the Epsilon is fully open. The Epsilons play with exceptional airiness and 3D, and what immediately stands out is the beautiful deep bass and very fine dynamic reproduction. You hear things on this speaker that you haven't heard before. The Epsilon is a dipole speaker and therefore must be placed at least 80cm away from the rear wall for serious listening. When listening to Analysis Audio speakers, you immediately notice that they are cabinet-free designs. Cabinet resonances are completely absent, providing a very fine and soothing sound with nothing that disturbs. All that remains is the perfect and pure musical presentation, which is very special to hear. The Epsilon can play quite loudly and delivers beautiful bass, and you can really play all types of music through it. The Analysis Audio Epsilon is permanently available at Ohm-Audio for a demo.
