General : The Borresen Z1 Cryo is a 2-way standmount speaker. The size is nicely compact yet the performance is outstanding. The Z-series from Borresen Acoustics are more affordable than the pricier 0-series, yet there is no compromise on quality. The tweeter and driver membranes are the same units as in the 0-series from Borresen Acoustics.
Engineering : The Børresen Z1 Cryo features a very thoughtful design. The black baffle is made of HDF and uses a clean, screw-less design. Where the 0-series from Borresen Acoustics are horn-shaped, the Z-series are square with rounded corners. The drivers and crossovers are manufactured by Børresen in-house. The drivers and tweeter used are unique. The dipole planar tweeter comes in from 2.500 Hz and is made from a special type of foil with a moving mass of just 0.01 grams, driven by a fast and super-powerful Super-Neodymium N52 magnet. The Bass/Midrange unit is a 4.5" cone made of a 4 millimeter thick 'Nomex Honeycomb Core' design with two layers of non-woven carbon fiber from the Japanese manufacturer 'Toray', a high-tech company that also manufactures components for Formula 1 cars and the aerospace industry. The structure of the woofer provides optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio and thus superior sound quality. Like the tweeter, the cones are driven by a powerful Neodymium N52 magnet. The combination of a light moving mass and powerful N52 Neodymium drive results in extremely fast unit acceleration, providing rapid response. The materials used result in very low self-inductance, which minimizes distortion and resonance. The Borresen Z1 Cryo is an open system, but through the clever use of diffusers at the bass port, the port doesn't output large sound waves with high energy toward the wall. Instead, the sound waves are dispersed and reduced, resulting in decreased energy output from the bass port. This allows you to place the Borresen Z1 fairly close to the rear wall without the bass resonating or dominating. Though some extra space is often desirable for optimal sound quality.
Listening : The Borresen Z1 Cryo sounds like no other speaker in its price class. So controlled, so spatial and so refined and free from resonance, at any volume. It's immediately clear that we're dealing with a very special speaker. The reproduction is very precise and realistic, yet at the same time there's an immense sense of calm throughout. You are immediately placed in the space where the performers are working, whether it's a small studio, a large hall or even a stadium. The Borresen Z1 Cryo conveys the atmosphere with great precision. The Borresen Z1 Cryo can play quite loud, and even at the highest volumes the sound remains stable and never unpleasant to listen to. Besides high volumes, you can of course also use the Borresen Z1 Cryo very well at low volumes. Due to the extremely low moving mass of the ultra-light tweeter & drivers, even with quiet music at room volume you'll hear every detail and see a spatial image. The Borresen Z1 Cryo is a speaker you'll most likely never want to part with. Unless a model from the 0-series from Borresen Acoustics comes within reach. Simply everything is present: dynamics, speed, rhythm, spaciousness and especially tranquility. What more could one ask for?
Cryo Version : This Borresen Z1 Cryo is the Cryo version of the Z1 speakers. This means all metal components undergo cryogenic treatment. Børresen Acoustics performs the cryogenic treatment of metal components in-house in their own way. The cryogenic treatment of metal components is a process that takes a total of 3 days. During the first 24 hours, the metal components are cooled to cryogenic temperatures. For the following 24 hours, the temperature is kept constant at around -196° Celsius. During the 24 hours that follow, the temperature of the metal components is gradually brought back to room temperature. The gradual cooling and warming of the metal components is crucial to prevent thermal stress in the metal. Cryogenic treatment of the metal components compresses and strengthens the metal structure and reduces residual stress in the metal that naturally occurs when metal transitions from its liquid phase to solid phase. The result of cryogenic treatment of the metal components is that conductivity increases by approximately 6-8%, which in turn provides faster and more transparent sound reproduction.
