General: Quad is an audio brand with an enormously rich history. Quad was actually the brand to have in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, Quad has breathed new life into this history by re-releasing the legendary 3-series equipment. But with the Artera series, Quad shows that they are also a modern company capable of producing sleek, versatile and great-sounding equipment at an affordable price. Despite the compact and stylish chassis, the Artera Mono is the most powerful amplifier Quad makes.

Technology: The Quad Artera Mono derives much of its power from Quad's patented current dumping technology. In this approach, a low-power Class A/B amplifier provides a pure and precise signal, while a high-power current dumping amplifier delivers pure power and control over the speakers. Internally, the Quad Artera Mono uses extremely pure OCC wiring; due to its casting and production method, this wiring has no crystal transitions in the copper, allowing the signal to pass freely, purely and unimpeded. This means the internal wiring adds no coloration to the sound and allows the amplifier to deliver its power directly to the output stage. The Quad Artera Mono delivers 2 x 300 watts at 8 ohms and 2 x 400 watts at 4 ohms. Combined with the very stable and powerful linear power supply, this makes the Quad Artera Mono highly suitable for many types of speakers, including speakers that demand a lot from amplifiers.

Listening: The Quad Artera Mono is a modern amplifier with a classic sound in modern clothing. The sound is neutral, powerful and dynamic, but in a way that doesn't shout about it. There is excellent distinction and intelligibility of the different layers in the recording through the very good articulation and rhythmic performance of the Quad Artera Mono. The sound is full and has good body without the sound appearing colored. With the large amount of power the Quad Artera Mono has, you don't need to be afraid to turn up the volume knob now and then, rock, metal, electronic music or large orchestral works are presented in grand and imposing fashion. More intimate music such as smooth jazz, vocal music and chamber classical is also presented in a detailed and enjoyable manner. Actually, in many respects we can simply say that the Quad Artera Mono sounds 'as it should'. A broad statement and certainly very personal, but after listening to these excellent mono power amplifiers, we suspect that a large part of people will agree with that statement.
