General: The ERA-1 is the first headphone from the historic UK brand Quad.

Technology: Quad is the manufacturer that first brought electrostatic speakers to the market in 1957. Since then, Quad has continuously improved their electrostatic speakers and new models have been released. The reason Quad primarily chooses electrostatic speakers is because of their very low distortion and resulting extremely neutral, natural, and detailed reproduction. Quad's goal in creating the ERA-1 headphone is to make this reproduction accessible to Head-Fi enthusiasts as well. The Quad ERA-1 is not electrostatic, but magnetostatic. The great advantage of this is that you can use it with many headphone amplifiers, instead of needing a special headphone amplifier that also needs to power the electrostatic field. Yet it is still a diaphragm that produces the music, rather than a traditional driver. This diaphragm in the Quad ERA-1 headphone is thinner than a human hair but still strong and elastic; these diaphragms are matched very precisely for balanced behavior and thus balanced reproduction across both channels. The use of this diaphragm compared to a traditional driver has the same advantages as with speakers: low distortion and clean, tight reproduction.

Listening: The Quad ERA-1 is a headphone with very high resolution and clean reproduction. Music is conveyed convincingly and realistically, and no detail is overlooked. Bass is not bombastic and overwhelming, but tight, rhythmic, and excellently defined. The build quality is also very good. The housing is metal and has been specially designed for optimal acoustic performance.

The Quad ERA-1 comes with a 215cm cable and two sets of ear pads: one set in synthetic leather with a soft fleece layer and one set in sheepskin. Additionally, a convenient and sturdy travel case is included so you can transport the Quad ERA-1 headphone safely and easily.
