General: The Audiobyte Black Dragon is a compact yet highly sophisticated D/A Converter that can also be used as a preamplifier and features a high-quality headphone amplifier.

Technical: The Black Dragon contains very high-quality components with advanced jitter reduction and uses an extremely accurate Femtovox Clock System. The DAC chips used are 2x AK4396 chips which process the audio signal in a fully balanced manner. The Audiobyte Black Dragon can play both High Res PCM files and DSD files up to DSD512. The output stage is fully Class A and uses a Zero Feedback design, which always provides wonderfully relaxed and lively reproduction. The power supply is linear and uses two separate toroidal transformers. The clearly readable display indicates the input and the playback file format excellently.

Listening: The Audiobyte Black Dragon sounds very musical; this is not a tame DAC that stays within the lines, it is a very expressive and lively sounding DAC in a very natural way. The sound is certainly not sharp or unbalanced, but the dynamic range of this compact DAC is excellently designed. Even when connected to a power amplifier as a preamplifier, the Audiobyte Black Dragon performs admirably. This makes it a versatile device with enormous musical character. Now at a great used price.
