General : Excellently built and very analog-sounding digital amplifiers from Aavik Acoustics from Denmark. The Aavik I-280 is the middle model of the I-series from Aavik Acoustics. The I-280 sits between the I-180 and the I-580.

Technology : The Aavik I-280 is a very powerful amplifier, with its 2 x 300 Watts at 8 Ohms and even 2 x 600 Watts at 4 Ohms it easily handles all speakers. Due to the use of resonant mode power supplies and tesla coil techniques from sister brand Ansuz Acoustics that are applied in the amplifier, the noise floor of the Aavik I-280 is extremely low. You quickly notice this in the silence of the soundstage. The housing is also an important aspect. The housing is made of a natural composite material which provides natural resonance behavior and thus a less technical sound. The Aavik I-280 has a very generous red dot display that is easy to read from the listening position and a very fine volume control, for people who don't like large displays the display is dimmable or can even be turned off completely.

Sound : What we are used to from class D amplifiers is tight dynamics and a neutral and rhythmic sound. Yet there is often a lack of musicality, something that doesn't just say: "wow, that sounds impressive", but also something that invites you to keep listening. At some point after getting used to a certain sound, the "wow factor" disappears, what must remain is music, because that's what it's all about. The amplifiers from Aavik Acoustics are so far the first class D amplifiers where we have the feeling that we are not only listening to something that sounds technically optimal, but also very musical and delivers an engaging, intriguing and especially beautiful sound. The Aavik I-280 first and foremost simply sounds very nice. Relaxed, spatial, and an enormous 3D bubble. The space in which the performers play is very clearly audible and the atmosphere is well conveyed to the listener. The Aavik I-280 sounds transparent, dynamic and lets you hear everything, but there is also a certain peace & comfort to the sound. So the sound is perfectly balanced and the overall picture simply checks out. So in terms of dynamics the Aavik I-280 might well go further than most class A (Tube) amplifiers, but that's not ultimately what it's only about. It's about sound quality, and to what extent an amplifier is capable of conveying emotions. And conveying emotions is where Aavik amplifiers excel. This Aavik I-280 is pure emotion.
