Technology: The Hifi Rose RA280 is the latest creation from Hifi Rose from South Korea. The design is a simplified version of the larger and more expensive RA180. It is a fairly compact amplifier, but the output power of no less than 250 watts per channel and the nearly 10 kg heavy, solidly constructed housing make it clear that it is no lightweight. The Hifi Rose RA280 is a Class AD amplifier; this combination of Class D and Class A technology delivers the best of both worlds. You benefit from the low harmonic distortion, high efficiency and high output power of the Class D amplifier, but also from the linearity in power delivery and organic sound of a Class A amplifier. The amplification is done by 2 separate amplification modules; because these are separated from each other, there is less interference between the two channels. The power supply is a very powerful, dynamic and modern supply developed by Hifi Rose itself using Silicon Carbide FETs. These FETs have higher efficiency than the more standard Silicon FETs and generate less heat.

Design and Connections: The Hifi Rose RA280 reminds us of the Swiss brand Nagra in terms of finish, but in a Hifi Rose way. The VU meters are a nice addition and can be dimmed via a switch on the front. On this front you will also find the Treble and Bass controls, which of course can also be bypassed. On the left side is the input control and on the right the volume knob. Everything is of high quality and feels very solid. The included remote control is also of high quality and has a minimalist finish. As for connections, there are 3 sets of analogue unbalanced RCA inputs, 1 set of analogue balanced XLR inputs, and a high-quality, distortion-free MM Phono input. For those with a subwoofer, there is also a single subwoofer RCA output on the back. The speaker terminals are gold-plated and can be used with Spades, Banana plugs or bare wire. Everything about this beautiful and compact amplifier feels high-quality and radiates quality, and that's how it sounds too.

Sound: The Hifi Rose RA280 is built to combine the power and dynamics of a Class D amplifier with the refinement and linearity of a Class A amplifier. This is certainly evident in the sound. Whether you're playing heavy electronic music or quiet vocal music, the Hifi Rose RA280 is designed for it. Dynamically and rhythmically, the sound is absolutely fine; the bass is firm and deep and the midrange is lively and rhythmic. Details are easy to hear and everything sits nicely in place in the soundstage. The sound is not sharp, digital, analytical or unnatural. On the contrary, the sound of the Hifi Rose RA280 is natural, beautifully balanced and very musical. This musical sound, combined with ample power to drive most speakers on the market and the gorgeously and high-quality finished housing, makes the Hifi Rose RA280 an absolute success in terms of price/quality.
