General: The Quad 33 and 303 are the preamplifier and power amplifier in the recently continued legendary 3-series by Quad. The 3-series also includes the 3 integrated amplifier and the 3CDT CD transport. The Quad 3-series consists of newly released equipment whose design and musicality are based on the vintage Quad 3-series, which dates from the late 1960s. Almost every audiophile, especially the audiophile who has been involved in audio for some time, knows the legendary Quad 33 and 303 amplifier set, now in a new guise.

Technology: The looks may be retro, with the orange old school display and matte gray front and a combination of gray and orange buttons on the Quad 33, and the vertically oriented chassis with cooling fins on the front in the case of the Quad 303, but the technology in the amplifiers themselves has fortunately been modernized. Of course, you can operate this modern Quad 33 with a remote control. The Quad 33 and Quad 303 also feature both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connections. Additionally, the Quad 33 preamplifier features a high-quality phono input that is easily switchable between MM and MC. Lastly, the Quad 33 also features an excellent current-feedback headphone amplifier with a 6.3mm jack connection on the front of the unit. Very versatile for such a compact and pleasant device. The Quad 303 is a compact amplifier; you can use it both as a stereo amplifier and as a mono power amplifier in bridged mode. On paper, it delivers 2 x 50 watts at 8 ohms and 2 x 70 watts at 4 ohms in stereo mode; in bridged mode, the Quad 303 delivers 140 watts at 8 ohms and 170 watts at 4 ohms. In many situations, a single Quad 303 in stereo mode is already sufficient, but for people with more challenging speakers, or people who like to turn the volume knob a bit higher, it is possible to add a second Quad 303 and use them as mono amplifiers. Aesthetically, it is also a nice setup to have a Quad 33 preamplifier between two 303 power amplifiers. Both the Quad 33 and the Quad 303 feature a powerful and stable linear power supply that ensures optimal control and authority in the sound.

Tilt Control: Like many classic vintage amplifiers, this Quad 33 also features an excellent tone control in the form of Quad's renewed 'Tilt Control'. What Tilt Control does is simultaneously lower the sound level of the bass tones while raising the sound level of the midtones and treble, or vice versa. The center point of the Tilt Control is 700 Hz. According to Quad, Tilt Control provides an effective way to fine-tune the sound to personal taste without the final sound having artificial coloration. In addition to the Tilt Control knob, you also have the option to only boost or reduce the bass with a separate rotary knob.

Sound: This Quad 33 + 303 set is clearly more modern and uses better and purer components compared to the vintage Quad 33 + 303 that came to market almost 60 years ago. This results in easier, more transparent playback with better dynamics and drive. But what is important is that the organic and welcoming sound of the vintage 3-series has been preserved. Voices sound pure and full and immediately capture attention. Instruments sound rhythmic and pleasant, and the atmosphere of space in live recordings is effectively conveyed to your listening room. Because this Quad 33 + 303 also has more modern sonic characteristics, you can confidently play electronic music, hip-hop, dance, or pop on it. If you buy a second Quad 303 and use them as mono power amplifiers in bridged mode, you not only have more power, but the soundstage also expands as a result, and a set of Quad 303s plays more easily, powerfully, and more detailed than a single Quad 303 in stereo mode.
