General: The Borresen C1 is the latest standmount speaker from Audio Group Denmark, and is the successor to the Z1 (Cryo). The Borresen C1 has been improved in many aspects compared to its predecessor and features the most modern technology available today.

Stands: The Borresen C1 is a 2-way standmount speaker. The massive stands are included and are therefore part of the price. With these stands you also receive 6 pieces of Ansuz Darkz S2T decouplers worth € 2,560. These Ansuz Darkz S2T decouplers are placed between the top plate of the stand and the bottom of the C1 speaker. This decouples the speaker from the stand, which improves the sound. It is still recommended to also place Ansuz Darkz decouplers under the bottom plate of the stands for the best results, but you are not required to do so as the stands can also simply stand on the floor.

Enclosure: The Borresen C1 enclosure is larger than that of the Z1 (Cryo), and combined with the new Borresen DCC5 Neo drivers, this provides a fuller and rounder bass response. The enclosure is made of internally reinforced wood composite material developed to minimize distortion, standing waves, and external resonances. This enclosure is further reinforced with a 1mm thick carbon panel on both sides. This carbon is not only for aesthetic appeal; it also contributes to the overall rigidity of the enclosure and better resonance response. Bass reflex ports are located at the rear as well as a port for venting the ribbon tweeter. Some distance from the rear wall is therefore desirable, though the Borresen C1 can stand considerably closer to the wall than you might expect. In our opinion, a minimum distance of 50cm from the rear wall is recommended for optimal sound quality.

Drivers: The midwoofer diaphragm has also been improved. It now consists of 2 layers of spread tow carbon with a layer of aramid in honeycomb design between them. This diaphragm is reinforced with a small amount of epoxy in the carbon. The voice coil of this driver is made of titanium instead of aluminum for lower resistance in the magnet system. Copper pole rings are also used in the magnet system to reduce inductance. The combination of materials and techniques results in an extremely stable driver with tremendous power and control. The diaphragm is extremely light and rigid, providing rapid acceleration and minimal distortion. It is driven by a powerful neodymium magnet system. These drivers are manufactured in-house by Audio Group Denmark and are engineered for virtually everything. The tweeter is also manufactured in-house; it is a ribbon tweeter with a moving mass of just 0.01 grams. This tweeter is extremely stable and linear in its output with virtually no distortion. The crossover in the Borresen C1 has also been improved compared to that of the Z1 (Cryo).

Listening: The Borresen C1 delivers excellent performance in its price class. The sound is what we have come to expect from Borresen: neutral, spacious, clean, detailed, and free from listening fatigue. When comparing the C1 to the Z1 (Cryo), you immediately hear clear improvements across all areas. The Borresen C1 has a more pleasant, musical, and rounded bass response. This bass is friendlier without losing precision. The bass of the Borresen C1 also resonates considerably less than the smaller Z1 (Cryo). In the midrange and treble, there is clearly more life and greater distinction between background and foreground. You hear more detail and the music is looser, more playful, and simply more interesting to listen to. Borresen Acoustics has clearly taken the right steps to make the Borresen C1 a worthy successor to the Z1 (Cryo). With the stands and Ansuz Darkz S2T decouplers for the top of the stands included in the price, this is simply one of the best standmount speakers in this price class that we know of.
