General: 2-way full range ribbon speakers.
Technology: The Analysis Audio Omega is the larger sibling of the Omicron and Epsilon, positioned just below the flagship Amphitryon. The Omega has been completely redesigned and now features a single wiring connection and a slightly modified switchable filter. The Omega now sounds considerably more open and fresher than before. Like all other Analysis Audio speakers, the Omega is a 2-way speaker with an extremely low crossover point for the tweeter. Starting from 650 Hz, the ultra-fast ribbon midrange/tweeter takes over from the ribbon woofer/midrange unit. There is no filtering in the sensitive area around 2500 Hertz, which is common in 2-way speakers. The filter itself is a 6dB filter with minimal components and minimal phase shift in the crossover region. The Omega's impedance is around 5 ohms and very flat, making it an easy load for the amplifier used. The tweeter itself is a true work of art. It is a 155cm long and nearly 4cm wide pure ribbon mounted in Kapton. Ribbons are known for being ultra-fast, transparent and uncolored sounding, and this ribbon midrange/tweeter of the Omega is among the best we have ever heard. With conventional dome tweeters, the dome is driven at the dome's wall, and all forces distribute through the diaphragm. This is not the case with the Omega ribbon. The diaphragm is driven across its entire surface. The same applies to the bass/midrange panel. Conventional woofers and midrange drivers are powerfully driven in the center, which creates stress in the cones. Not so with Analysis Audio. In fact, both diaphragms of all Analysis Audio speakers are the voice coil itself, so no cones or domes are driven at all. The woofer panel itself is also a ribbon, but here the panel is trapezoidal. This is quite special and avoids resonances and standing waves in the foil. What is even more special is that the woofer/midrange ribbon is not stretched extremely tight in the frame, but is suspended by a kind of rubber surround. The panel can therefore move quite freely, and the Omega is able to reproduce exceptionally deep bass because of this. The Omega is quite a large speaker, measuring 168cm high, 61cm wide, and 6cm deep. The sensitivity is certainly adequate at 86dB, and the Omega sounds sublime with amplifiers from around 2 x 50 watts. The maximum power handling of the Omega is 250 watts, so the Omega can play quite loud, although you can enjoy the full music reproduction at lower volumes as well. The Analysis Audio Omega is a substantial speaker and it sounds truly fantastic.
Listening: The Analysis Audio Omega is clearly a larger sibling of the Omicron and Epsilon. The Omega sounds essentially the same, but plays noticeably deeper and more powerful in the bass, the soundstage is also larger, and the Omega can clearly play louder, and generally, somewhat easier at high volumes. Really a loudspeaker system for larger rooms. Fresh out of the box, the new Omega already sounds excellent, but it is clear that these ribbon loudspeakers still need some break-in time, like any other high-end speaker. After 100 hours of playing, the Omega is fully opened up. The Omegas play with remarkable airiness and 3D imaging, and what immediately stands out is the beautiful deep bass and the very fine dynamic reproduction. You hear things on this loudspeaker that you have not heard before. The Omega is a dipole loudspeaker and therefore must be positioned at least 80cm away from the rear wall for serious listening. When listening to Analysis Audio loudspeakers, you can hear that they are cabinet-less designs. Cabinet resonances are completely absent and that provides a very fine and soothing sound, there is nothing that disturbs. What remains is the perfect and pure musical presentation, and that is very remarkable to hear. The Omega can play quite loud and delivers superb bass, and you can really play all kinds of music with it. The Analysis Audio Omega is permanently available at Ohm-Audio for a demo. Make an appointment and come listen to them.
