General: Reference speaker from Sonus Faber, entirely handcrafted in Italy. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese is a tribute to the finest creation by the renowned violin maker Antonio Stradivari, the 'Cremonese' created in 1715 which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015, the year the il Cremonese launched. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me is a special edition of the il Cremonese. Finished in the classic 'Red Violin' finish by Sonus Faber, a beautiful and distinctive color that you can also find in older Sonus Faber models such as the Sonus Faber Stradivari. The Ex3me version of the il Cremonese also uses more modern techniques and materials such as a Diamond/Beryllium tweeter, Nano-Carbon Nomex Honeycomb long-throw basswoofers, and a redesigned crossover. Initially, only 50 pairs of the il Cremonese Ex3me were to be made, but due to its great success they continued the project and produced more. Technical: The Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me is beautifully finished, with its real wooden sides which are lacquered and polished, its string front panels and leather finishing at the front and back makes the Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me a true work of art. But beyond the outstanding design that we all know from Sonus Faber, the il Cremonese Ex3me is also technically accomplished. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me is made from natural materials, according to Sonus Faber's vision speakers should be made from the same materials as musical instruments. Sonus Faber has also employed the lute shape for years, which has proven itself at a high level, the Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me also has a lute shape which not only makes it look brilliant, but also makes it acoustically very pleasant. The bottom plate is CNC-milled aluminum, and the top plate is also made from the same aluminum, but with a black glass plate integrated into it. These plates provide a more rigid structure in the cabinet and improved damping of resonances. The units consist of a 30mm DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) Beryllium Dome Tweeter that operates from 2500Hz with Neodymium drive, housed in its own wooden enclosure. Diamond Like Carbon Beryllium means the tweeter is made of Beryllium, a material with extremely good properties in terms of transparency and precision. Subsequently, through 'Chemical Vapour Deposition' technology, a layer of diamond-like carbon fiber was applied to the Beryllium tweeter, which reduces the metallic character of pure Beryllium and provides a friendlier character without compromising the speed and precision of the tweeter. Below the tweeter you'll find a 180mm midrange driver which provides 'The Voice of Sonus Faber', the crossover range is between 250Hz and 2500Hz and the cone itself is made from an air-dried mixture of natural fibers. The midrange driver is also driven by a Neodymium magnet, and the midrange driver is also housed in its own compartment in the cabinet of the Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me. Thanks to a strategically placed copper Faraday ring, the midrange driver's operation is not affected by 'Eddy Current', which reduces the noise floor and provides cleaner and quieter reproduction. Below the midrange driver you'll find two 180mm bass drivers for the midrange/bass region, these 180mm bass drivers are supported by means of an UltraFlex port on the underside of the speaker. The 180mm drivers are not filtered by a crossover; instead, they filter themselves. This allows the front bass drivers to work in perfect synchronization with both the midrange driver and the 2 basswoofers on the side of the speaker. For the sub-bass, there are two 220mm woofers per speaker mounted on the sides of the cabinet which are also in their own enclosure and are also supported by a bass reflex port on the underside of the speaker. These woofers are made of nano-carbon fiber, consisting of 3 layers. Due to the sandwich/honeycomb design of the cone, these long-throw woofers can achieve enormous excursion without distortion. This results in impressive bass reproduction. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese Ex3me is therefore an open system and requires adequate breathing space on the sides and back of the speaker, though less than you might expect from a speaker of this size. Since the woofers face to the side and are on only one side of the cabinet, you also have the choice to have them face outward or inward, which provides a change in the firmness and placement of the bass. The efficiency is 92dB at 1 Watt, which is not unfavorable. Nevertheless, Sonus Faber itself recommends using at least a 100 Watt amplifier since the il Cremonese Ex3me does require some control if you turn it up louder.
