General: The Quad 3 is the integrated amplifier from the recently continued legendary 3-series by Quad. In this 3-series you will also find the 33 preamplifier and 303 Stereo/Mono power amplifier and the 3CDT CD transport. The Quad 3-series consists of newly released equipment which in terms of design and musicality is based on the vintage Quad 3-series dating from the late 1960s.

Technology: The looks may be retro, with the orange old school display and matte grey front and buttons, but the technology and amplifier itself have fortunately been modernized. The Quad 3 amplifier features a high-quality ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M DAC with various digital inputs including Coax, Toslink, USB and even an HDMI ARC input for televisions. As a nice bonus, it also includes a Bluetooth 5.1 aptX HD receiver for easy music playback via Bluetooth. Finally, there is also an excellent current-feedback headphone amplifier in the Quad 3 with a 6.3mm jack connection on the front of the unit. Very versatile for such a compact and pleasant device.

The power supply is a powerful linear supply with 235VA ring core transformer, supported by 30,000uF current reserve for powerful reproduction with excellent dynamic range. The 2 x 65 Watts at 8 Ohms or 2 x 100 Watts at 4 Ohms is more than sufficient for many speakers, even speakers with average to slightly lower efficiency. However, for those who like to turn up the volume knob now and then with more difficult speakers, it might be better to choose a Quad 33 preamplifier with two Quad 303 power amplifiers in mono configuration.

Tilt Control: Like many classic vintage amplifiers, this Quad 3 also features an excellent tone control in the form of Quad's renewed 'Tilt Control'. What Tilt Control does is simultaneously lower the sound level of the low tones while raising the sound level of the midtones and high tones, or vice versa. The midpoint at Tilt Control is 700 Hz. According to Quad, Tilt Control provides an effective way to fine-tune the sound to personal taste, without the final tone having artificial coloration. In addition to the Tilt Control button, you can also choose to boost or reduce only the bass with a separate rotary knob.

Sound: The Quad 3 is clearly a more modern amplifier with better and purer components compared to the Quad 3-series equipment that came to market almost 60 years ago. This results in easier playing, more transparency, dynamics and drive. But what is important is that the organic and welcoming sound of the vintage 3-series has been preserved. Voices sound pure and full and immediately grab attention. Instruments sound rhythmic and pleasant and the spatial atmosphere of live recordings is effectively conveyed to your listening room. Because the Quad 3 also has more modern sonic characteristics, you can confidently play electronic music, hip-hop, dance or pop on it. With its enormous versatility, compact format, retro look and musical sound, the Quad 3 is a true crowd-pleaser. The very friendly price of € 1.499,- completes the picture.
