General: The Borresen A2 is the latest floor-standing speaker from Audio Group Denmark, positioned between the Borresen X2 and the Borresen C2. In its price range, the Borresen A2 is an exceptionally high-quality, musical and well-finished speaker.

Cabinet: The design of the Borresen A-series is based on the earlier and much more expensive 0-series. This also means that the Borresen A-series, unlike the other Borresen Acoustics series, is finished in wood. You can choose between beautiful and warm walnut wood veneer, or neutral and elegant Black Ash black wood veneer. The cabinet of the A-series is, however, considerably heavier than the cabinet of the 0-series because the thickness of the HDF cabinet has been increased significantly, resulting in an even more stable and taut reproduction. The Borresen A2 features a unique bass reflex system; these are not tuned to a specific frequency and are purely designed to control and manage air pressure inside the cabinet. The in-house manufactured ribbon tweeter also has its own compartment in the cabinet, which is vented through a port, allowing the tweeter to see free space, resulting in treble reproduction comparable to that of a planar magnetostatic or electrostatic speaker. Some distance from the rear wall is recommended, though the Borresen A2 can be placed closer to the wall than one might expect.

Drivers: The Borresen A2 is a 2.5-way speaker, meaning the midrange is not filtered downward and thus plays along with the bass. This creates a smooth and effortless transition between bass and midrange because there is no crossover point. The drivers and tweeter are manufactured in-house by Borresen Acoustics. The bass woofer and midrange are called Borresen DCC5s drivers by the manufacturer. The membrane of the DCC5s drivers consists of 2 layers of spread tow carbon with a layer of aramid in honeycomb design in between, pressed together tightly. The membrane is reinforced with a small amount of epoxy in the carbon, which also holds the layers together. This DCC5s driver membrane is extremely light, weighing less than 6 grams, and is also extremely stiff, making it an enormously distortion-free driver. This allows the musical signal to be reproduced correctly and coherently without distortion. The voice coil of the DCC5s driver is made of titanium instead of aluminum for reduced resistance in the magnet system. Additionally, copper pole rings are employed in the magnet system for reduced inductance. As a result, the drivers, which are already extremely light, move very freely without resistance within the magnet system. The combination of materials and techniques results in an extremely stable driver with enormous power and control. The tweeter is also manufactured in-house; it is a ribbon tweeter with a moving mass of 0.01(!) gram. This tweeter is extremely stable and linear in its reproduction and distorts virtually not at all.

Listening: The Borresen A2 sets new standards in its price range. The sound is what we are accustomed to from Borresen: neutral, spatial, clean, detailed and free from listening fatigue. When we compare the A2 with the already excellent and cheaper X2, you hear clear and immediate improvement across every aspect. More detail, more space and more layers in the recording that unfold. The Borresen A2 has a more extensive and musical bass reproduction with plenty of definition. The midrange of the Borresen A2 is powerful yet clean and realistic. Once properly positioned in the room, the speakers also completely disappear when you close your eyes. The treble, like all Borresen speakers, is extremely refined and detailed but without harshness or sharpness. The Borresen A2 is a clear step forward compared to the Borresen X2, and for those who want to take another step further than the A2, the Borresen C2 is an option. Each step up at Borresen Acoustics maintains a character that largely remains the same, but simply becomes more extensive, more detailed and more defined. The Borresen A2 is a perfect sweet spot between the X2 and the C2 and, thanks to its beautiful appearance and wood finishes as well as excellent price-to-quality ratio, we expect the Borresen A2 to be a very interesting speaker for many people and rooms.
