Technology : At first glance, the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 does not look very impressive. That is actually a plus: the cabinet is a classic square design without too many frills. It looks modern and calm. The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 uses many technologies from the higher 800 Diamond 3 series. For example, it has a metal sound-transparent protective frame for the tweeter, and behind the tweeter is a tube that gets progressively thinner (just like the one on top of the 803D3, but here inside the cabinet instead of on top of it), which absorbs all the tones that are pushed into the cabinet, so the high tones are reproduced more purely from the front. The midrange driver, as with the 800 Diamond series, is a unit made from B&W's new Continuum material, and the midrange has no roll surround, meaning it is attached to its own basket. This ensures a stable, neutral, realistic and fast reproduction. The bass units are based on the units from the 800 Diamond 3 series, but with a simpler construction. The 'Aerofoil' cones of the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 are made of 2 layers of paper and 1 layer of polystyrene, whereas those in the 800 Diamond 3 series are made of carbon fibre and synthetic foam. Otherwise the construction is the same.

Listening : The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 sounds very musical for a small 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker under € 3.000,00. You can immediately hear that Bowers & Wilkins has focused on a neutral and clean reproduction. Voices sound pure and full, and the high tones are sparkling yet balanced and refined. The soundstage is also very wide and pleasant to listen to, you are immediately surrounded by a sound bubble. The bass goes impressively deep for the size of these 3-way floorstanding loudspeakers. There is a solid punch in the low end and you experience little to no cabinet resonance. All in all, the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 is a loudspeaker with many beautiful technologies and qualities, and the price/quality ratio is also spot on.
