General : The Ayre KX-R is Ayre's reference preamplifier, matching the MX-R and MX-R Twenty power amplifiers, as well as other brands.

Technical : The Ayre KX-R, like the MX-R, is constructed from a single heavy block of solid aircraft aluminum. The entire chassis and internal compartments are milled from it. Everything fits with precision to 1/100 mm. Such an ultra-solid chassis offers several advantages. First, vibrations have no chance of reaching the circuit boards. Second, the circuit boards are isolated from the power supply. No electromagnetic interference, therefore. Third, the entire chassis acts as a solid heat regulator. All components perform at their optimal temperature. Additionally, the chassis is 100% dust and dirt proof. All inputs not used during music playback are 100% disconnected. This prevents any interference from other connected equipment. Another crucial point is the volume control. Often you see a chip or resistor network controlled via an electronic switch, but Ayre chose to build the volume control entirely mechanically. It features 2 mono volume switches with silver-to-silver contacts, both adjusted by a stepper motor. This adjustment produces a mechanical click. Not entirely by accident, this very exclusive KX-R is therefore called the Cluncker in audiophile circles. This Ayre KX-R was fitted with a new volume control in 07-2017. Technically, the Ayre KX-R is an absolute masterpiece. Zero feedback, maximum music.
