General : The DS-E1 is a beautiful handcrafted optical cartridge from Japanese DS Audio. This cartridge has a stylus that touches the groove of a turntable, but what happens further in the cartridge is fundamentally different from a regular cartridge. While an MM or MC cartridge works with coils and magnets, the DS Audio DS-E1 uses a light signal and photosensitive diodes. This all sounds super high-tech of course, but don't worry, this entire process is still analog, only the way the electrical music signal is generated differs. Besides having an attractive appearance and an interesting story to tell your friends, it also has several practical and auditory implications. For instance, the output voltage of the DS-E1 is many times higher than that of an MM or MC cartridge, which makes it relatively less susceptible to noise in the signal path. This also means that the music signal requires less amplification with all the benefits that entails. Furthermore, the noise floor is extremely low with this cartridge, which ensures an exceptionally pure sound.
