The Magnepan 20.7 is the second largest Magnetostat from Magnepan, with only the flagship featuring 2 panels per channel, the 30.7, being larger. The Magnepan 20.7 is a 3-way panel with push-pull membranes, meaning magnets on both sides. This delivers completely linear membrane reproduction. The 150cm long ribbon tweeter is unique of its kind and one of the very best units in the world for high-frequency reproduction. Like all Magnepans, the 20.7 is a dipole speaker, meaning it radiates both forward and backward. Adequate distance from the rear wall is therefore essential. The low-frequency radiation pattern has 8 lobes, which has the advantage that you can direct the bass energy. This is not possible with conventional speakers. Much has been written about Magnepan's sound quality, and it's all true. You won't get better than the 20.7, even if you place speakers costing a fortune next to it. More and deeper bass, yes; more sound pressure, yes; but more resolution, imaging, and musical insight, no. All Magnepans are highly musical, and resonance is simply non-existent.
