General : The Nagra Classic DAC is a musical Swiss precision instrument.

Technology : The Nagra Classic DAC uses most of the technology also applied in the Nagra HD DAC. The digital input and processing boards are identical to those of the Nagra HD. The analog output stage is different. The DA conversion comes from a joint venture with AK Design, and runs at a very high internal resolution of DSD 2x. Everything is treated as DSD. The sampling frequency is 5.6MHz and the internal operation is 72Bit precise. This avoids steep filters and has a positive effect on sound quality. The output stage is set in full class A and uses 9 military-grade precision FETs for this. The USB input is designed for DXD and DSD2 signals and PCM signals up to 384KHz. The output stage is so good it is comparable to that of the Nagra HD DAC, but the Classic DAC has no volume control or headphone output. The internal power supply is also excellent in quality. No fewer than 25 different power supplies are used internally. Each component has its own dedicated power supply. The Nagra Classic DAC is a compact, super-high-quality unit with excellent sound quality.

Listening : Connected to the Nagra Classic Integrated Amplifier, it immediately stands out how good this Nagra Classic DAC is. The Nagra Classic DAC plays very openly, crystal clear and precisely. The small and very fine details immediately come to the fore and the spatiality is also very large. You hear deep into the recording location and truly no detail is missed. Yet with this Nagra Classic DAC, the emphasis is not on detail, but the Classic DAC uses the technology for the overall experience. Some very detailed DA converters sound glassy and mechanical, as if the amount of detail is the most important thing in music, but that is precisely not the case. It is about the overall experience; the unit must convey music, and that is what the Nagra Classic DAC does very convincingly. The fantastic build quality of the power supplies and the class A output stage are directly responsible for this. It is very nice to listen to the Nagra Classic DAC. Not tiring at all, but rather very engaging. The combination with the Nagra Classic Integrated is sublime, but even connected to other (pre)amplifiers, the musical quality remains completely intact.
