General : The latest preamplifier from Pass

Technology : The Pass XP-12 is an excellent preamplifier from the latest series of preamplifiers by Pass. The chassis has remained the same, except for some beveling, but the technology is completely new. The power supply is entirely new and now includes a larger and shielded toroidal transformer, which is potted. The power supply electronics have been improved and feature a lower noise floor, and buffering has been increased. Also new is the volume control, adopted from the XS series by Pass. Now 100 steps of 1dB with greater precision and fewer components, and less distortion at each volume setting. The output buffer is more heavily designed and also features bias settings taken from the XS. The Pass XP-12 is therefore set to operate at a much higher Class A level. The Pass XP-12 is technically considerably improved and you can hear it. The beautiful aluminum remote control has remained. New is the Trigger output, to switch Pass power amplifiers on and off remotely.

Listening : The Pass XP-10 was already an excellent preamplifier, but the XP-12 clearly offers more. More calm, more refinement, and more power. Simply more musical. What has remained is the very accessible sound quality. No flattened and over-controlled electronics, but very fast and pure signal processing.
