General : The Van Medevoort DA466 is an excellent DAC, made in the Netherlands.

Technical : The Van Medevoort DA466 is capable of converting files up to 24bit / 192kHz. Files with lower resolution will also be internally converted to 24bit / 192kHz so the chip does not need to be scaled back. This has the effect that the chip can constantly work at its optimal frequency and resolution. The Van Medevoort DA466 has a wide range of inputs, including 3 SPDIF inputs, one of which can be switched between AES/EBU XLR and Coax RCA, and 2 which can be switched between Coax RCA and Toslink Optical. Additionally, there are 2 USB inputs, each with their own converter and their own clock. Finally, there is the Q-link input, which is essentially I2S over 4 RCA connectors. This can be used, for example, with the Van Medevoort CT460 CD transport. This Q-link input also has its own converter and clock.

Listening : The Van Medevoort DA466 sounds extremely refined. The sound is clean and the background is quiet and deep. One might think this suggests an "analytical" sound, but we do not experience it that way. On the contrary, the sound is both tight and clean but also very refined and musical. A nicely tight and organized sound, with a playful edge.
