Technology : The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 doesn't look particularly impressive at first glance. Which is actually nice – the cabinet is classically square without too many frills. It looks modern and understated. The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 makes use of many technologies from the higher 800 Diamond 3 series. It features a metal sound-transmitting protective frame for the tweeter, and behind the tweeter is an increasingly tapered tube (similar to, for example, the 803D3 on top, but inside the cabinet instead of on top) that ultimately dampens all tones pushed into the cabinet, allowing the high tones to be reproduced more purely from the front. The midrange driver, like in the 800 Diamond series, is a unit made from B&W's new Continuum material, and the midrange driver has no surround, meaning it's mounted directly to its own basket. This ensures stable, neutral, realistic and fast reproduction. The bass units are based on the units from the 800 Diamond 3 series, but in simpler form. The 'Aerofoil' of the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 consists of 2 layers of paper and 1 layer of polystyrene, whereas in the 800 Diamond 3 series these are made of carbon fiber and synthetic foam. The rest of the construction is the same.

You can immediately hear that Bowers & Wilkins has focused on neutral and clean reproduction. Vocals sound pure and full, and the high tones are sparkling yet balanced and refined at the same time. The soundstage is also very spacious and pleasant to listen to – you're immediately immersed in a sound bubble. The bass goes impressively deep for the size of this 3-way floor-standing speaker. There's considerable 'punch' in the low end and you'll experience little to no cabinet resonance. All in all, the Bowers & Wilkins 704 S2 is a speaker with many fine technologies and qualities, and the price-to-quality ratio is excellent.
