General : Beautiful floor-standing 3-way speakers with a modest size but enormous sound from Acoustic Energy.

Technical Details : The AE3 MK2 enclosure is divided into two parts, each separately ventilated and tuned. The upper section features a 32 mm ring dome tweeter and a custom-made 130 mm midrange driver with a light alloy cone that is 33% thinner than the AE1, much more efficient and faster than the standard midrange driver. This cabinet section is also damped using 5 mm thick steel plates on the inner walls and a "crossbracing" that spans the cabinet to reduce resonance. The lower section is where the speaker's power comes from. The bottom enclosure is robustly built, both horizontally and vertically. Two 165 mm cone woofers are mounted on the side walls of the lower section. These are oppositely directed, in phase, which provides minimal resistance for the woofers and results in fast and powerful bass with minimal coloration. The cabinet weighs a full 30kg and stands rock solid; cabinet coloration is simply not an issue with the Acoustic Energy AE3 MK2.

Listening : The Acoustic Energy AE3 MK2 sounds much larger than its size. The bass is enormously powerful, with lots of body and at the same time crystal clear. The midrange is full, comfortable and free from coloration. The treble is clean, detailed and never crosses an irritation threshold. The overall picture of the speaker is right, and the sound is excellently balanced. The soundstage is also very lively and deep, and the soundstage is large and real. Sometimes the sounds come so close to live recordings that you really feel like you're standing among the audience.
