General : Reference speaker from Sonus Faber, completely handcrafted in Italy. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese is a tribute to the finest creation of the famous violin maker Antonio Stradivari, the 'Cremonese' created in 1715 which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015, the year the il Cremonese came to market.

Engineering : The Sonus Faber il Cremonese is beautifully finished, with its genuine wooden sides that are lacquered and polished, its string-themed front and leather finishing on the front and back make the Sonus Faber il Cremonese a true work of art. But beyond the outstanding design we've come to expect from Sonus Faber, the il Cremonese is also technically excellent. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese is made from natural materials, according to Sonus Faber's philosophy speakers should be made from the same materials as musical instruments. Sonus Faber has also used the lute shape for years, which has proven itself at a high level, the il Cremonese also has a lute shape which not only makes it look brilliant, but also makes it acoustically very pleasant. The bottom plate is CNC-machined aluminum, and the top plate is also made of the same aluminum, but with a black glass plate integrated into it. These plates provide a more rigid cabinet structure and improved damping of resonances and the like. The units consist of a 28mm soft dome tweeter that operates from 2500Hz with Neodymium drive, which is housed in its own wooden enclosure. Below that you'll find a 180mm midrange driver for the range between 250Hz and 2500Hz made from a mixture of natural fibers, also driven by a Neodymium magnet, and which is also housed in its own enclosure in the cabinet. You'll also find two 180mm bass drivers for the midbass/bass range between 250Hz and 80Hz which provide perfect crossover between the midrange and bass tones. For the sub-bass, each speaker has two 220mm woofers integrated on the side of the cabinet which are in their own enclosure and supported by a bass reflex port on the bottom of the speaker. The Sonus Faber il Cremonese is an open system, with 3 small bass ports on the back and a large bass port on the bottom of the speaker. This provides good ventilation which results in a smooth, pure and pleasant yet firm bass. However, it does require space on the sides and back of the speaker. Since the woofers face sideways you also have the choice to have them face outward or inward, which allows for a change in the tightness and placement of the bass. The efficiency is 92dB at 1 Watt, which is not unfavorable. Nevertheless, Sonus Faber itself recommends using at least a 100 Watt amplifier since the il Cremonese does require some control when you're playing at higher volumes.

Listening : The Sonus Faber il Cremonese has a sound that you immediately connect with, you feel at home right away and from the very first second it's pure enjoyment. You notice in everything that this is a true reference speaker. Of course, the soundstage is enormous, natural and powerful. The bass is smooth, firm and pure. Because the cabinet is asymmetrical and quite substantial, the 2 fast sub-bass units have an easy task, and the low end sounds very natural and stress-free. Too large units in a too small cabinet can certainly deliver plenty of bass, but often sound a bit strained. The midrange, vocals and instruments sound enormously natural without a trace of harshness. The units are also made of special paper in a sandwich construction, and this type of unit always tends to sound very natural. Yet the Sonus Faber il Cremonese is a very dynamic, fast and transparent speaker but with a certain 'feel' in the sound, a character trait that you find in most modern Sonus Faber models. The treble is also fast and easy to listen to. You don't miss any detail. Yet nothing overwhelms, the Sonus Faber il Cremonese is a textbook example of a well-balanced speaker where the overall picture simply works.
