General: The Magnepan 1.7i is the smallest 3-way planar speaker from Magnepan. This model sits above the LRS+ and .7, and below the 2.7i and 3.7i

Technology: The Magnepan 1.7i has a single membrane with ribbons of 3 different sizes. The largest segment is the bass driver. The narrower segment with the wide ribbons is the midrange, and the narrowest segment with much smaller ribbons is the tweeter. All frequencies come from the same plane, so this speaker is naturally very phase coherent. All frequencies emanate from one point. And that is audible. You will need a powerful amplifier for the Magnepan 1.7i, as the efficiency is not very high, and the impedance is 4 ohms. Once connected to a good and powerful amplifier, you'll quickly notice that the sound quality of the Magnepan 1.7i is many times better than its price suggests.

Listening: Once accustomed to Magnepans, you cannot go back to dynamic speakers, so it is said. And there is truth to that. Magnepans sound extremely pure, and they know no cabinet coloration. After all, a Magnepan has no cabinet. However, a Magnepan, including this 1.7i, needs some distance from the back wall, at least 75 cm, but once positioned this way, a completely unique sound quality reveals itself. The soundstage is large, pure and with great precision. The Magnepan 1.7i is suitable for all types of music, but we cannot call it a true hard rock speaker, as this speaker's sound is far too pure for that.
