Description : The Bricasti M21 MDx is a unique device on the market. It is a Bricasti M1SE Dual Mono DA Converter with a built-in separate Reference Quality Analog preamplifier to directly drive power amplifiers. It also includes a built-in network player which is suitable as a RoonReady endpoint, Audirvana Endpoint or JRiver Player.
Technology : The Bricasti M21 is built like the other Bricasti products. Completely made from solid aluminum panels, which are precision-machined by the CNC milling machine to the nanometer. The Bricasti M12 originates from the Bricasti M1SE but has an extra DAC built in. The Bricasti M21 is a reference-class Dual Mono DA Converter with 2 separate PCM converters and a separate discrete DSD converter, with the most common digital inputs, such as High Speed USB 2.0, AES/EBU, SPDIF via RCA, Coax and Toslink. The Bricasti M21 has an R2R Ladder DAC for PCM, and a Delta Sigma DAC, and a discrete DSD DAC on board. The Bricasti M21 has a 6 picosecond clock built-in for the USB input. Ultra precise therefore. The Bricasti M21, unlike the M1 and M1SE and like the M12, has a 100% analog preamplifier output board. This fully balanced analog board now controls the volume not digitally, but in the analog domain, with an R2R ladder network. Compromise-free signal processing in class A and always maximum digital resolution at any volume is the result. The Bricasti M21 therefore has no analog inputs available like the Bricasti M12 does. The quality of all components is reference-grade. The ceramic audio boards are unique, and extremely expensive. The Bricasti M21 has 3 completely separate power supplies, including 3 transformers. The Bricasti M21 has a standard UTP network connection and a built-in high-end audio streamer. With this connection you can operate the Bricasti M21 as a RoonReady player, Audirvana Player or JRiver Player. The Bricasti M21 thus functions as a streaming endpoint. Even DSD and DXD can be sent directly to the Bricasti M21 without any conversion.
Listening : The Bricasti M21 MDx sounds fantastic. Using the remote control you can select the DA Converter during playback. If you choose the Delta Sigma Converter, the M21 sounds a lot like the M12. Purely analog, without a hint of harshness. The soundstage is then grand, pure and beautifully balanced. The 3D presentation is ultra precise, and you perceive an unprecedented tonal richness. The soundstage is truly 3D and has a certain fleshliness that the competition does not have. Thanks to the built-in analog preamplifier, the digital resolution is always 100%, and the Bricasti M21 sounds enormously powerful, even with the most difficult power amplifiers. If you choose the Ladder R2R DA Converter, the Bricasti M21 sounds faster, more dynamic and noticeably brighter than the Bricasti M12. The details jump out more. The difference is clearly audible, but we would not say the M21 is better than the M12. It is more a matter of taste and combination. With the arrival of the MDx board, the M12 and M21 have moved closer together, but the extra R2R ladder DA Converter makes the Bricasti M21 absolutely unique.
Conclusion :
Bricasti M21 is a unique device. We actually don't know any other device that is so well built, sounds so good, and is so versatile. Consider this:
- Triple DA Converter dual mono with 4 mono PCM DA Converter's (delta sigma and R2R) and 2 mono discrete DSD DA Converter's switchable with the remote control
- Roonready streamer board built-in (Bricasti M5)
- High Power class A analog preamp output
- Ladder network volume control
- Fully CNC milled enclosure
- Ceramic Arlon circuit boards
- Aluminum remote control
- Very clear and large display
