General: 2-Way Full Range Ribbon Loudspeakers

Technology: The Analysis Audio Omicron is the smallest ribbon speaker from Analysis Audio, Greece. The Omicron has been completely redesigned and now features a single wiring connection and the crossover filter has been modified. The ribbon tweeter now plays 1dB louder without the series resistor, and this is clearly audible. Like all other Analysis Audio speakers, the Omicron is a 2-way speaker with a very low crossover point for the tweeter. From 600 Hz onwards, the ultra-fast ribbon midrange/tweeter takes over from the ribbon woofer/midrange unit. There is no filtering in the sensitive region around 2500 Hertz, which is typical for a 2-way speaker. The filter itself is a 6dB filter with minimal component count and minimal phase shift in the crossover region. The impedance of the Omicron is around 5 ohms and very flat, making it a simple load for any amplifier. The tweeter itself is a true work of art. It is a 90cm long and nearly 4cm wide pure ribbon, encased in Kapton. Ribbons are known for being ultra-fast, transparent and uncolored sounding, and this ribbon midrange/tweeter of the Omicron ranks among the best we have ever heard. With conventional dome tweeters, the dome is driven at the dome wall, and all forces disperse through the diaphragm. This is not the case with the Omicron ribbon. The diaphragm is driven across its entire surface. The same applies to the bass/midrange panel. Conventional woofers and midrange drivers are powerfully driven in the center, which causes stress in the cones. Not so with Analysis Audio. In fact, both diaphragms of all Analysis Audio speakers are the voice coil themselves, so there are no cones or domes being driven at all. The woofer panel itself is also a ribbon, but the panel here is trapezoid-shaped. This is unique and avoids resonances and standing waves in the foil. What is even more special is that the woofer/midrange ribbon is not stretched extremely tight in the frame, but is suspended from a special rubber surround. The panel can therefore move very freely and make large excursions without stress, allowing the Omicron to reproduce particularly deep bass. The Omicron is relatively compact for a planar speaker, measuring 112cm high, nearly 61cm wide, and only 6cm deep. The sensitivity is certainly adequate at 86dB, and the Omicron plays sublimely with amplifiers from around 2 x 50 Watts. The maximum power handling of the Omicron is 250 watts, so the Omicron can also play quite loud, although this is not necessarily required since the Omicron reproduces the entire music perfectly even at low volumes. The Analysis Audio Omicron is the smallest speaker from Analysis Audio, but it sounds fantastic.

Listening: Right out of the box, the new Omicron sounds excellent, but it is clear that these ribbon speakers still need some break-in time, just like any other high-end speaker. After 100 hours of play, the Omicron is already fully broken in. What immediately stands out is the pure tonal reproduction. The Omicron sounds crystal clear and uncolored. You instantly notice that all forms of cone distortions and cabinet resonances are completely absent. The Omicrons play with remarkable airiness and deliver a very large 3D soundstage, and what is even more striking is the beautiful deep bass and very fine dynamic reproduction. You hear things on this speaker that you have never heard before. You look very deep into the soundstage and you truly see and hear everything. Very special. The Analysis Audio speakers are dipole speakers, just like, for example, the Magnepan speakers from America. The special thing about a dipole is that it does not radiate bass all around, but in an 8-lobed pattern. This has a particularly large advantage especially in difficult rooms. You can direct the bass and thus tune it to the position. This is not possible with ordinary dynamic speakers, as they radiate all around, below approximately 200Hz. Then you either have luck or bad luck at the listening position. The Omicron is therefore a dipole speaker and must consequently be positioned at least 80cm from the rear wall when listening seriously. When you listen to the Analysis Audio speakers, you can hear that they have cabinet-less designs. Cabinet resonances are completely absent because there is no enclosure, and that provides a very fine and soothing sound with nothing that disturbs. All that remains is the perfect and pure musical presentation, and that is very special to hear. Play a number by Elvis Presley and it sounds as if Elvis is sitting in the room, in front of you, on a chair. Very special. The Omicron can play quite loudly and delivers a beautiful bass, and you can really play all types of music with it. The Analysis Audio Omicron is permanently available at Ohm-Audio for a demo. Make an appointment and come listen to them. The Analysis Audio Omicron, or one of the other models, will amaze you.
