General: 2-way Full Range Ribbon loudspeakers
Technology: The Analysis Audio Omicron is the smallest ribbon loudspeaker from Analysis Audio from Greece. The Omicron has been completely redesigned and now features single wiring connection and the switchable filter has been modified. The ribbon tweeter now plays 1dB louder without the series resistor, and this is clearly audible. Like all other Analysis Audio loudspeakers, the Omicron is a 2-way loudspeaker with a very low crossover point for the tweeter. From 600 Hz onwards, the ultra-fast ribbon midrange/tweeter takes over from the ribbon woofer/midrange unit. There is therefore no filtering in the sensitive area around 2500 Hertz, which is common in a 2-way loudspeaker. The filter itself is a 6dB filter, with minimal number of components and minimal phase shift in the crossover range. The impedance of the Omicron is around 5 ohms and is very flat, making it an easy load for the amplifier used. The tweeter itself is a true work of art. It is a 90cm long and almost 4cm wide pure ribbon, encased in kapton. Ribbons are known for their super-fast, transparent and uncolored sound, and this ribbon midrange/tweeter of the Omicron is among the best we have ever heard. With conventional dome tweeters, the dome is driven at the dome wall, and all forces distribute through the membrane. With the Omicron ribbon, this is not the case. The membrane is driven over its entire surface. This is also the case with the bass/midpanel. Normal woofers and midrange drivers are driven forcefully in the middle, which creates stress in the cones. Not so with Analysis Audio. In fact, both membranes of all Analysis Audio loudspeakers are the voice coil themselves, so no cones or domes are driven at all. The woofer panel itself is also a ribbon, but the panel is trapezoidal here. This is unusual and avoids resonances and standing waves in the foil. What is even more special is that the woofer/midrange ribbon is not stretched super tightly in the frame, but is suspended from a special rubber surround. The panel can therefore move very freely and make large excursions without stress, which allows the Omicron to reproduce particularly deep bass. The Omicron is relatively compact, especially for a planar loudspeaker, and measures 112cm high, almost 61cm wide, and is only 6cm deep. The sensitivity is certainly adequate at 86dB, and the Omicron plays sublimely with amplifiers from around 2 x 50 watts. The maximum power handling of the Omicron is 250 watts, so the Omicron can also play quite loud, although this is not necessarily required since the Omicron reproduces the entire music perfectly even at low volumes. The Analysis Audio Omicron is the smallest loudspeaker from Analysis Audio, but it sounds fantastic.
Listening: Out of the box, the new Omicron sounds excellent straight away, but it is clear that these ribbon speakers still need some break-in time, like any other high-end speaker. After 100 hours of playing, the Omicron is completely broken in. What immediately stands out is the pure tonal reproduction. The Omicron sounds crystal clear and uncolored. It is immediately apparent that all forms of cone distortions and cabinet resonances are completely absent. The Omicrons play exceptionally airy and have a very large 3D soundstage, and what also immediately stands out is the beautiful deep bass and the very fine dynamic reproduction. You hear things on this speaker that you have never heard before. You look very deep into the sound image and you really see and hear everything. Very special. The Analysis Audio speakers are dipole speakers, just like the Magnepan speakers from America, for example. The special thing about a dipole is that it does not radiate bass all around, but in 8 lobes. This has a particularly large advantage especially in difficult rooms. You can aim the bass, and thus tune it to the position. This is not possible with ordinary dynamic speakers, because they radiate all around, below approximately 200Hz. Then you are either lucky or unlucky at the listening position. The Omicron is therefore a dipole speaker and must therefore be placed at least 80cm away from the back wall if you listen seriously. When you listen to the Analysis Audio speakers, you hear that they are cabinet-less designs. Cabinet resonances are completely absent because there is no housing, and that gives a very fine and soothing sound, there is nothing that disturbs. All that remains is the perfect and pure musical presentation, and that is very special to hear. Play a song by Elvis Presley and it sounds as if Elvis is in the room, in front, on a chair. Very special. The Omicron can play quite loudly and delivers a beautiful bass, and you can really play all types of music with it. The Analysis Audio Omicron is permanently available at Ohm-Audio for a demo. Make an appointment and come listen to them. The Analysis Audio Omicron, or one of the other models will amaze you.
