General: The McIntosh MA7200 is a very complete 2 x 200 Watt integrated amplifier with built-in DAC and phono inputs for both MM and MC cartridges. There is also a high-quality headphone amplifier built in.

Technology: The McIntosh MA7200 is a very complete and stable amplifier with distinctive technologies. The McIntosh MA7200 offers plenty of connections for virtually any type of equipment. There are phono inputs and a DAC on board with various digital inputs including a USB input, allowing even DSD signals to be played. The DAC in the McIntosh MA7200 is a module that can optionally be replaced by a later generation DAC module in the future. There is also a Pre Output on the MA7200 for connecting a subwoofer, active speakers, or possibly a second power amplifier. A unique technique of McIntosh amplifiers is that McIntosh uses output transformers (called Output Autoformer by McIntosh themselves) in transistor amplifiers, as well as in the MA7200. Normally, output transformers are only found in tube amplifiers; a transistor theoretically does not need an output transformer. Yet it can offer advantages; for example, a transformer does not allow direct current (DC) to pass through and the transistors need to handle less current, which keeps the transistors cooler and makes them more efficient in power consumption. Also, McIntosh's output transformers have 3 taps for both 8 Ohm, 4 Ohm, and 2 Ohm speakers, allowing the amplifier to deliver full power at any impedance. The fact that the McIntosh MA7200 hardly gets warm comes not only from the output transformers inside, but also from cooling fins developed by McIntosh themselves on the side of the amplifier. For protection, the McIntosh MA7200 features 'Power Guard' which prevents the amplifier from clipping, so your speakers are not at risk. In case of overvoltage or short circuit, the McIntosh MA7200 has a fuseless protection built in, called 'Sentry Monitor'. By not using fuses, the current is barely impeded, which benefits sound quality.

Appearance: You can almost always recognize a McIntosh device from a mile away, as with the McIntosh MA7200. The MA7200 features the characteristic glass plate on the front where the McIntosh logo lights up in green and where there are 2 analog meters with an illuminated blue background. Below that you will find an LED display that indicates the volume and input, and with which you can also open and control the menu. For those who don't like illuminated equipment, the lights behind the analog meters can be switched off and the intensity of the LED screen can be easily dimmed or brightened. The McIntosh MA7200 is very solidly built and can drive virtually any speaker on the market; with its 44.5cm (W) x 19.4cm (H) x 55.9cm (D) the dimensions are still modest for the large number of functions the MA7200 has; the MA7200 weighs 34kg.

Sound: The McIntosh MA7200 has the typical McIntosh character. That means the MA7200 sounds beautifully warm, detailed, and full. The difference with older McIntosh equipment lies more in the detail and tangibility of the soundstage. The McIntosh MA7200 will never give too much, or too little of anything. The sound is very controlled and balanced; even at higher volumes with heavier music, the McIntosh MA7200 maintains its grip and the sound remains comfortable so you don't need to rush to the volume control to turn it down. This means that after hours, days, weeks, months, or years you can still enjoy the McIntosh MA7200. Although the McIntosh MA7200 sounds quiet and refined, it does not sound boring or too tame. Because of this very refined character, the McIntosh MA7200 is suitable for virtually any type of music at virtually any volume on virtually any type of speaker. It is also worth mentioning the excellent service that McIntosh offers on its equipment, so you don't need to worry about the future, as parts are well stocked and can simply be made available in the future, and McIntosh never leaves its customers out in the cold, as it should be.

Ohm-Audio B.V. is an official McIntosh dealer. The McIntosh MA7200 can be auditioned without obligation by appointment while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee; we also have the MA352, MA9000, and MA12000 in stock for comparison.
