General: The Borresen A3 is the largest model in the latest A-series loudspeakers from Audio Group Denmark; it is the model between the Borresen X3 and the Borresen C3. The Borresen A3 is an exceptionally high-quality, musical, and well-finished loudspeaker in its price range.
Enclosure: The design of the Borresen A-series is based on the earlier and much more expensive 0-series. This also means that the Borresen A-series, unlike the other series from Borresen Acoustics, features a wood finish. The choice is between beautiful and warm walnut wood veneer or neutral and elegant black ash wood veneer. However, the enclosure of the A-series is considerably heavier than that of the 0-series because the enclosure walls are made significantly thicker, which provides an even more stable and tight reproduction. The Borresen A3 features a unique bass reflex system; these are not tuned to a specific frequency and are purely present for controlling and regulating the air pressure inside the enclosure. The in-house manufactured ribbon tweeter also has its own compartment in the enclosure, which is vented through a port, allowing the tweeter to see a free space, which provides treble reproduction comparable to that of a planar magnetostatic or electrostatic loudspeaker. Some distance from the rear wall is desirable, although the Borresen A3 can be placed considerably closer to the wall than you might expect.
Drivers: The Borresen A3 is a 2.5-way loudspeaker, which means the midrange is not filtered downward and thus works together with the bass. This creates a smooth and effortless transition between bass reproduction and the midrange because there is no crossover point. The drivers and tweeter are manufactured in-house by Borresen Acoustics. The bass woofers and midrange are referred to by the manufacturer as Borresen DCC5s drivers. The diaphragm of the DCC5s drivers consists of 2 layers of spread tow carbon with a layer of aramid in honeycomb design between them, which are pressed together rigidly. This diaphragm is reinforced with a small amount of epoxy in the carbon, which also holds the layers together. The diaphragm of the DCC5s driver is extremely light and weighs less than 6 grams; moreover, it is also extremely rigid, making it an exceptionally distortion-free driver. This allows the music signal to be reproduced correctly and coherently without distortion. The voice coil of the DCC5s driver is made of titanium instead of aluminum for reduced resistance in the magnet system. Copper pole rings are also used in the magnet system to minimize inductance. As a result, the drivers, which are already extremely light, also move very freely without resistance within the magnet system. The combination of materials and techniques results in an exceptionally stable driver with enormous power and control. The tweeter is also manufactured in-house; it is a ribbon tweeter with a moving mass of 0.01(!) gram. This tweeter is extremely stable and linear in its reproduction and distorts virtually not at all.
Listening: The Borresen A3 sets new standards in its price class. The sound is what we are accustomed to from Borresen: neutral, spatial, clean, detailed and free from listener fatigue. If we compare the A3 with the already excellent and cheaper X3, you hear clear and immediate improvement across every aspect. More detail, more space and more layers in the recording that unfold before you. If you compare the Borresen A3 with the Borresen A2, you hear in the Borresen A3 a fuller, calmer and more pronounced bass reproduction. Also, the soundstage of the Borresen A3 is larger and particularly higher due to the higher placement of the midrange driver. The Borresen A3 has an extensive and musical bass reproduction with plenty of definition. The midrange of the Borresen A3 is powerful yet clean and realistic. Once properly set up in the room, the speakers also completely disappear when you close your eyes. The treble, as with all Borresen speakers, is extremely refined and detailed but without harshness or brittleness. The Borresen A3 is a clear step forward compared to the Borresen X3, and for those who want to take one more step beyond the A3, the Borresen C3 is an option. Each step up with Borresen Acoustics brings a character that largely remains the same, but simply becomes more extensive, more detailed and more defined. The Borresen A3 is a perfect sweet spot between the X3 and the C3 and, thanks to its beautiful appearance and wood finishes and excellent price-to-quality ratio, we expect the Borresen A3 to be a very interesting speaker for many people and rooms.
The Borresen A3 is available in a walnut wood veneer or black ash wood veneer. We have the Borresen A3 standard demo in stock and ready to listen to by appointment.
