Analysis Audio Omicron, 2 way Ribbon Speaker
EN.
General : 2 Way Full Range Ribbon speakers
Technology : The Analysis Audio Omicron is the smallest ribbon speaker from Analysis Audio in Greece. The Omicron has been completely redesigned and now features a Single Wiring connection and the crossover has been modified. The ribbon tweeter now plays 1dB louder without the series resistor, and this is clearly audible. Like all other Analysis Audio speakers, the Omicron is a 2 way speaker with a very low crossover point for the tweeter. From 600 Hz onwards, the ultra-fast ribbon midrange/tweeter takes over from the ribbon woofer/midrange unit. There is therefore no filtering in the sensitive area around 2500 Hertz, which is common in a 2 way speaker. The crossover itself is a 6db filter, with minimal number of components, and minimal phase shifts in the transition area. The impedance of the Omicron is around 5 ohms and is very flat, making it an easy load for the amplifier used. The tweeter itself is a true work of art. It is a 90cm long and almost 4 cm wide pure ribbon, set in kapton. Ribbons are known to sound ultra-fast, transparent and uncolored, and this ribbon midrange/tweeter of the Omicron is among the best we have ever heard. With normal dome tweeters, the dome is driven at the dome wall, and all forces spread through the diaphragm. With the Omicron ribbon this is not the case. The diaphragm is driven over its entire surface. This is also the case with the bass/midpanel. Normal woofers and midrange speakers are driven powerfully in the middle, which creates stress in the cones. Not so with Analysis Audio. In fact, both membranes of all Analysis Audio speakers are the voice coil itself, so no cones or domes are being driven at all. The woofer panel itself is also a ribbon, but here the panel is trapezoidal in shape. This is special and it avoids resonances and standing waves in the foil. What is even more special is that the woofer/midrange ribbon is not stretched super tight in the frame, but is suspended from a special rubber surround. The panel can therefore move very freely, and make large excursions without stress, which allows the Omicron to also reproduce particularly deep bass. The Omicron is relatively compact, especially for a planar speaker, and measures 112cm high, almost 61cm wide, and is only 6cm deep. The sensitivity is certainly adequate at 86dB, and the Omicron plays sublimely with amplifiers from around 2 x 50 Watts. The maximum power handling of the Omicron is 250 watts, so the Omicron can also play quite loud, although this is not necessarily required as the Omicron reproduces all music perfectly even at low volumes. The Analysis Audio Omicron is the smallest speaker from Analysis Audio, but it sounds fantastic.
Listening : Fresh out of the box, the new Omicron already sounds excellent, but it is clear that these ribbon speakers still need to break in, like any other high-end speaker. After 100 hours of play, the Omicron is fully broken in. What first stands out is the pure tonal reproduction. The Omicron sounds crystal clear and uncolored. It immediately becomes apparent that all forms of cone distortions and cabinet resonances are completely absent. The Omicrons play particularly airy and feature a very large 3D image, and what is even more immediately noticeable is the beautiful deep bass and very fine dynamic reproduction. You hear things on this speaker that you have never heard before. You look very deep into the sound image and you really see and hear everything. Very special. The Analysis Audio speakers are dipole speakers, just like, for example, the Magnepan speakers from America. The special feature of a dipole is that it does not radiate bass all around, but in 8 lobes. This has a particularly great advantage especially in difficult rooms. You can direct the bass and tune it to the position. This is not possible with ordinary dynamic speakers because they all radiate omnidirectionally below approximately 200Hz. So you either have good luck or bad luck at the listening position. The Omicron is thus a dipole speaker and must therefore be positioned at least 80cm from the rear wall for serious listening. When listening to the Analysis Audio speakers you will hear that they are cabinet-less designs. Cabinet resonances are therefore completely absent because there is no enclosure, which creates a very fine and soothing sound with nothing to disturb you. All that remains is the perfect and pure musical presentation, and this is very special to hear. Play an Elvis Presley number and it sounds like Elvis is in the room, upfront, on a chair. Very special. The Omicron can play quite loud and delivers beautiful bass, and you can really play all types of music with it. The Analysis Audio Omicron is permanently available at Ohm-Audio for demonstration. Make an appointment and come listen to them. The Analysis Audio Omicron, or one of the other models will amaze you.
