General : The Audiobyte Black Dragon is a compact yet very high-quality D/A converter that can also be used as a preamplifier and also features a good headphone amplifier.

Technology : The Black Dragon contains very high-quality components, it has advanced jitter reduction, and the clock used is a very accurate Femtovox Clock System. The DAC chips used are 2 AK4396 chips, which process the audio signal fully balanced. The Audiobyte Black Dragon can play both High Res PCM files and DSD files up to as much as DSD512. The output stage is fully class A and uses a Zero Feedback design, which always ensures a wonderfully relaxed and lively sound. The power supply is linear and uses two separate toroidal transformers. The clearly readable display shows the input and the playback file format excellently.

Listening : The Audiobyte Black Dragon sounds very musical. This is not a tame DAC that stays within the lines; it is a very expressive and lively-sounding DAC, yet in a very natural way. The sound is certainly not harsh or unbalanced, and the dynamic range of this compact DAC is simply very well put together. Also connected to a power amplifier as a preamplifier, the Audiobyte Black Dragon performs well. This makes it a versatile device with a huge musical character. Now available at a great used price.
