Pass Labs USA is primarily known for its outstanding Class A and Class A/B amplifiers, such as the excellent Pass Labs XA-100.5. However, Pass Labs USA also manufactures outstanding reference loudspeakers. The first loudspeaker from Pass Labs is the fully active Rushmore. The Pass Labs SR-1 is the successor to the Rushmore loudspeaker, or the "Son of Rushmore". The Rushmore is a 200 kg heavy fully active loudspeaker produced from 2003 to 2008. The successors to the Son of Rushmore are the Pass Labs SR-1 and the smaller SR-2. The SR-1 is a 4-way, closed passive loudspeaker and the design features are the same as the Son of Rushmore. Infinite and perfect dynamics, outstanding control, very large imaging and ultra-low distortion. For the SR-1, Pass Labs has chosen top-line Excel units, with Nextel coating magnesium woofers and midrange units, and the 29mm Hexadym Magnet Softdome tweeter. The bass output of the SR-1 is handled by a separate closed enclosure with a 26cm Nextel Subwoofer and a 22cm Nextel Midwoofer. On top of the bass unit sits the likewise closed midrange/treble speaker. This mid/high unit is completely decoupled from the bass enclosure via spikes. The construction most resembles the Wilson Audio Maxx 2 and Maxx 3. The designed crossover filter is built with very expensive components, such as Kimber and Solen capacitors, Mills resistors and Erse air coils. The wiring is the same as used in the Pass Labs amplifiers. A unique feature is that the Pass Labs can be adjusted for any room. The tweeter, midrange and midbass units are adjustable with a 3-step switch. You can set the treble, midrange and midbass at +1dB, 0dB, and -1dB. The Pass Labs SR-1 is entirely designed as a phase-, tonal- and dynamically correct reproducer, and that is audible. The Pass Labs SR-1 sounds very natural and coherent. The bass reproduction is very clean and reaches very deep, without sounding excessively heavy. All details in the bass are very clearly audible. The midrange sounds very quiet and very beautifully articulated, and the treble reproduction is silky smooth and very detailed. The sound emerges completely from the speakers and fully relaxes you. The Pass Labs SR-1 can play very loudly, but also very softly. Even late in the evening at very low levels you won't miss anything.
