General : Superbly engineered and very analog-sounding digital amplifier by Aavik Acoustics from Denmark. The Aavik I-180 is the entry-level model in the I-series from Aavik Acoustics. The I-180 sits between the I-280 and the I-580 from Aavik Acoustics.
Technology : The highly advanced technology in Aavik Acoustics amplifiers is unique. Aavik Acoustics manufactures digital amplifiers with an analog heart and focuses largely on suppressing noise, cast resonances and distortion in a way that does not compromise the purity of the audio signal. The Aavik I-180 makes use of Aavik's patented UMAC technology. When amplifying the audio signal using UMAC technology, the waveform is modulated with a sine wave instead of a triangle modulation, and this results in a much finer and smoother reproduction. Damping is high and control over the speakers is optimal. The power supply is very generously dimensioned, powerful & stable and always up to the task. Also, an important aspect is the natural enclosure. The enclosure is made of a natural composite material. No hard and cold aluminum; Aavik Acoustics has reduced the amount of aluminum used to an absolute minimum to the point where it is only necessary for cooling. Aavik Acoustics has invested considerable effort in making the enclosure resonance-free, and this translates directly into sound quality. This is very important. Too much damping or damping that is not applied correctly can have the opposite effect. The Aavik I-180 has a very generously dimmable display that is easy to read from the listening position and a very fine volume control. Everything has been thought of. You can optionally place Darkz Resonance Control resonance dampers from Ansuz Acoustics under the amplifier if you don't have an anti-resonance hi-fi cabinet. If you have multiple Aavik Acoustics devices, they are stackable using ceramic or titanium balls, onto which you can then place a Darkz Resonator from Ansuz Acoustics. This way, multiple devices take up minimal space without affecting each other through vibrations. The technical design is very advanced and uses various techniques from sister brand Ansuz Acoustics. The Aavik I-180 features an extensive Noise Reduction system. The Aavik I-180 has 36 Active Tesla Coils and 96 Active Square Tesla Coils. These Tesla Coils extract various electromagnetic radiation from the air and inside the enclosure, ensuring a clean and undistorted music signal within the amplifier. There are also 4 Anti Aerial Resonance Coils in the Aavik I-180. Anti Aerial Resonance Coils are a type of conduit wrapped around the conductors from the output stage to the speaker connections. These reduce the last bit of contamination that would otherwise reach the speakers. The digital electronics feature no less than 5 Dither circuits. Power consumption is very favorable. The Aavik I-180 consumes only 0.5 watts in standby, and in music mode the consumption is 50 watts idle. Technically, the amplifiers from Aavik Acoustics are the cream of the crop among digital amplifiers, and not only that. They are, in our opinion, the first Class D amplifiers with a 100% analog character without a trace of hardness and which also cause no listener fatigue even after extended listening sessions.
Sound : What we are accustomed to from Class D amplifiers is tight dynamics and a neutral, rhythmic sound. Yet they often lack a sense of musicality, something that doesn't just say: "wow, that sounds impressive," but also something that invites you to keep listening. At some point after you get used to a certain sound, the "wow factor" disappears, and what must remain is music, because that's what it's all about. The amplifiers from Aavik Acoustics are, to date, the first Class D amplifiers where we feel that we are not only listening to something that sounds technically optimal, but also highly musical, offering an engaging, intriguing, and especially beautiful sound. The Aavik I-180 simply sounds wonderful. Relaxed, spacious, and with an enormous 3D bubble. The space in which the performers play is very clearly perceptible and the atmosphere is well conveyed to the listener. The Aavik I-180 sounds transparent, dynamic, and lets you hear everything, but there is also a certain sense of calm & comfort in the sound. The sound is thus perfectly balanced and the overall picture is simply right. So in terms of dynamics, the Aavik I-180 may well go further than most Class A (tube) amplifiers, but that's not ultimately what it's all about. It's about sound quality and the degree to which an amplifier is able to convey emotions. And conveying emotions is where Aavik amplifiers excel. This Aavik I-180 is pure emotion. We are very enthusiastic about the entire Aavik range, and the I-180 is a fully-fledged member of the family.
Conclusion : The Aavik I-180 is a unique integrated amplifier with ample output power (2x300 Watts continuous at 8 Ohms) in a compact, lightweight and stylish enclosure with fantastic sound quality. The operation is very simple and exceptionally refined. Welcome to the musical and emotional world of Aavik Acoustics.
