Streaming Audio can essentially be divided into 2 separate groups. Streamers without internal storage, which cannot store music, and streamers with internal storage, where music is stored on an internal storage medium, such as Hard Drive or SSD. Often, streamers without storage are equipped with a built-in DA Converter, and units with internal storage often have only one or multiple digital outputs. From a sound perspective, the version with internal storage and without a built-in DA Converter is the best option. The DA Converter does not become outdated, because it is external. And with the various connections, you can transport the digital signal in multiple ways. On the market there are many players available, one better than the other, but as a true High End Audio solution many brands fall short. Sonically at best reasonable, and in terms of operation strongly disappointing and a speed to despair. After a long search and extensive testing of many brands and units, we are convinced that the best sounding Streamers, and also the most versatile and easiest to operate streamers come from New Zealand: Antipodes Audio

Antipodes builds High End Audio streamers differently. Many audiophiles listen to music with for example an Apple MacMini, or a PC, or they build a Windows or Linux PC and then get the digital audio signal from the standard USB output of the mainboard, or from a special USB output. That can all work fine and it can even sound fine, but if you listen carefully it really sounds much worse than a High End Audio Streamer from Antipodes. Antipodes discovered that when it comes to processing digital signals, everything matters. Already just reading from storage (HDD or SSD) makes a huge difference. Controlling the data streams so that they can be transported without ripples or other disturbances. Digital noise is also a major problem for digital components and a computer is standard rife with internal noise. To get the bits reasonably out of an Audio Streamer is simple, but to do it 100% correctly requires great effort. But it is worth it. Antipodes makes the most bit-perfect and best sounding streamers on the market. 

Power Supply 

The new Antipodes units (Oladra Project) use specially designed Hybrid DR (Discreetly Regulated) Switch Mode Power Supplies. Audiophiles tend to think that conventional old-fashioned linear power supplies are better, but in fact they are only heavier and slower, and therefore less precise. And with digital devices such as streamers, it's about the speed and purity of the power supply. The noise that isn't there, you don't have to filter out either. Nowadays, some top High End amplifiers are also equipped with Switched Mode Power Supplies. It's about using the power supply that causes the least disturbance, in other words the lowest noise threshold. Now a Discreetly Regulated Switched Mode Power Supply of ultra-high quality is not cheap, but it functions best in the Antipodes streamers. Simply put, there are 2 types of noise. EMI, electromagnetic distortion that enters your power grid or is caused by components that emit it, and RFI which enters the Audio equipment through the air, radiation that is. The average PC, Laptop, or Server is not designed with noise minimization in mind, but the Streamers from Antipodes certainly are. Electrical Noise finds its way into the Streamers and disrupts the data stream in various places, and can also cause jitter. In the heart of every Antipodes streamer it is about having the best possible and purest, so noise-free power lines in the basics. All external and later solutions, such as noise filters and jitterbugs, are quick fixes afterwards, and help only partially, and cause as many disadvantages as advantages for sound quality. Prevention is simply better than cure. According to Mark Jenkins, the developer of Antipodes, most Streamers on the market have mediocre power supplies, and furthermore have Noise filters and Jitterbugs built in. Such Streamers sound dull, slow, sometimes sharp and certainly not natural. Antipodes goes the other way by not using Noise filtering, and building all power supply lines as purely as possible from the source. The much-heard theory, oh well, we build some filters, buffers and Jitterbugs in the DAC and then the source doesn't matter anymore. Reality is really different. The Antipodes streamers are very carefully designed and Noise is minimized at every power supply stage, and thus the best sound quality is achieved. The transformer is a custom wound transformer, a custom-made unit. Only after trying many custom-made transformers and almost throwing in the towel, the right types were found. The rectifier bridge and power regulator board are also custom built, and very expensive. The power regulator itself is a hybrid IC/Discrete version, developed by Antipodes themselves. Mark Jenkins has tested fully IC regulated regulators, and also fully discrete regulators, but the Hybrid version sounds best.
