General : The McIntosh MA7200 is a very complete 2 x 200 Watt integrated amplifier with built-in DAC and phono inputs for both MM and MC cartridges. It also features a high-quality headphone amplifier.
Technology : The McIntosh MA7200 is a very complete and stable amplifier with distinctive technologies. The McIntosh MA7200 offers plenty of connections for virtually any type of equipment. There are phono inputs available and a DAC on board with various digital inputs including a USB input, allowing even DSD signals to be played. The DAC in the McIntosh MA7200 is a module that can optionally be replaced by a later generation DAC module in the future. There is also a Pre Output on the MA7200 for connecting a subwoofer, active speakers, or possibly a second power amplifier. A unique McIntosh amplifier technology is that McIntosh uses output transformers (called Output Autoformers by McIntosh) in transistor amplifiers, as well as in the MA7200. Normally, output transformers are only found in tube amplifiers; a transistor generally doesn't need an output transformer. Nevertheless, it can offer its advantages—a transformer, for example, blocks direct current (DC) and the transistors need to handle less current, allowing them to stay cooler and be more efficient in power consumption. The McIntosh output transformers also have 3 taps for 8 Ohm, 4 Ohm, and 2 Ohm speakers, allowing the amplifier to deliver full power at any impedance. The fact that the McIntosh MA7200 barely heats up is partly due to the output transformers and also to cooling fins developed by McIntosh itself on the side of the amplifier. For protection, the McIntosh MA7200 has 'Power Guard' which prevents the amplifier from clipping, so your speakers are not at risk. In case of overvoltage or short circuit, the McIntosh MA7200 has a fuseless protection circuit built in, called 'Sentry Monitor'. By not using fuses, the current is barely restricted, which benefits sound quality.
Appearance : You can almost always recognize a McIntosh device from a kilometer away, as with the McIntosh MA7200. The MA7200 features the distinctive glass panel on the front where the McIntosh logo lights up in green and where 2 analog meters with a backlit blue background are located. Below you'll find an LED display showing the volume and input, and you can also open and operate the menu with it. For those who don't like illuminated equipment, the lights behind the analog meters can be switched off and the brightness of the LED screen can be easily dimmed or made brighter. The McIntosh MA7200 is very solidly built and can drive virtually any speaker on the market. With its 44.5cm (W) x 19.4cm (H) x 55.9cm (D), the size is still modest for the large number of functions the MA7200 has. The MA7200 weighs 34kg.
Sound : The McIntosh MA7200 has the typical McIntosh character. This means the MA7200 sounds beautifully rich, detailed, and full. The difference from older McIntosh equipment lies more in the detail and tangibility of the soundstage. The McIntosh MA7200 will never give you too much or too little of anything. The sound is very controlled and balanced. Even at higher volumes with heavy music, the McIntosh MA7200 maintains its grip and the sound remains comfortable—you won't have to rush to the volume control to turn it down. This ensures that after hours, days, weeks, months, or years, you can still enjoy the McIntosh MA7200. Although the McIntosh MA7200 sounds quiet and refined, it doesn't sound boring or too tame. Due to this highly refined character, the McIntosh MA7200 is suitable for virtually any type of music at virtually any volume with virtually any type of speaker. It's also worth mentioning the excellent service McIntosh provides on its equipment. You don't have to worry about the future, as spare parts are in stock and can be obtained later, and McIntosh never leaves its customers in the lurch, as it should be.
