General: The Quad 33 is the preamplifier from the recently continued legendary 3-series by Quad. In this 3-series you will also find the 303 Stereo/Mono power amplifier, the 3 integrated amplifier and the 3CDT CD transport. The Quad 3-series consists of newly released equipment which in terms of design and musicality is based on the vintage Quad 3-series which dates back to the late 1960s. Almost every audiophile, and especially those who have been in audio for a while, knows the legendary Quad 33 and 303 amplifier set, now in a new look.

Technology: The looks may be retro, with the orange old school display and matte gray front and a combination of gray and orange buttons, but the technology and the amplifier itself have fortunately been modernized. Of course you can operate this modern Quad 33 with a remote control. The Quad 33 preamplifier also features both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs and outputs. In addition, the Quad 33 amplifier has a high-quality phono input which is easy to switch between MM and MC. Finally, there is also an excellent current-feedback headphone amplifier in the Quad 33 with a 6.3mm Jack connection on the front of the unit. Very versatile for such a compact and pleasant device. The power supply is a stable linear power supply with ring core transformer and multiple power reservoirs. The volume control of the Quad 33 is a fully analog, motorized and high-quality ALPS potentiometer which guarantees a long service life and a low noise floor.

Tilt Control: Like many classic vintage amplifiers, the Quad 33 also features an excellent tone control in the form of Quad's renewed 'Tilt Control'. What Tilt Control does is simultaneously lower the sound level of the low tones while raising the sound level of the midtones and high tones, or vice versa. The center point with Tilt Control is 700 Hz. According to Quad, Tilt Control provides an effective way of fine-tuning the sound to personal taste without the resulting sound having artificial coloration. In addition to the Tilt Control button, you also have the option to boost or reduce only the bass with a separate rotary control.

Sound: The Quad 33 is clearly a more modern preamplifier with better and purer components compared to the vintage Quad 33 that came to market almost 60 years ago. This results in easier playback, more transparency, dynamics and drive. What is important, however, is that the organic and welcoming sound of the vintage 3-series has been preserved. Voices sound pure and full and immediately grab attention. Instruments sound rhythmic and pleasant and the spatial atmosphere of live recordings is effectively conveyed to your listening room. Because the Quad 33 also has more modern sonic characteristics, you can confidently play electronic music, hip-hop, dance or pop on it. Of course, you can use the Quad 33 as a high-quality preamplifier with phono with various power amplifiers from various brands, and thanks to the balanced outputs you can use the Quad 33 with many types of equipment. But honestly, there is really only one true amplifier that belongs with this Quad 33 preamplifier, and that is the Quad 303 stereo/mono amplifier. You can place one of these as a stereo amplifier, or place two of them in mono mode. Then you have a perfect match aesthetically and tonally.
