General : Powerful closed 3-way floor-standing speaker from ATC. This pair of ATC SCM40 MK2 is only 1.5 years old and is in virtually like-new condition, and this pair is supplied including the original packaging and accessories.

Technology : The ATC SCM40 MK2 has been the successor to the identically named ATC SCM40 since 2013, which dates from 2007; we describe the new ATC SCM40 MK2 as an MK2 version for convenience. ATC is a headstrong yet respected brand from the UK. For over 40 years, ATC has been producing loudspeakers of extremely high quality and well-thought-out engineering. The midrange is handled by a 75mm soft dome midrange unit. As cone midrange drivers became increasingly popular, the soft dome midrange unit gradually disappeared from view. ATC remained loyal to the soft dome midrange unit and it is also built into the latest ATC SCM40 MK2. The main advantage of a soft dome midrange unit is that, in addition to excellent dispersion, it radiates sound waves in a similar manner to the dome tweeter. This ensures excellent cooperation between the midrange unit and the tweeter and a smoother transition between the mid and high tones. The bass is handled by a 164mm hand-coated paper cone woofer. The ATC is easy to drive, thanks to its high impedance of 8 Ohms, but it does require a generous amount of watts if you want to play it at higher levels.

Listening : Once connected to a good amplifier with generous power, the ATC SCM40 MK2 plays beautifully. Due to its closed cabinet and light bass woofers, the low frequencies are very tight, pure and firm. The midtones are wonderfully pleasant and vibrant, voices sound natural and there is little cabinet coloration in the sound. The highs are very detailed and refined. The beauty of the ATC SCM40 MK2 is that you can use it with both a powerful solid state or Class D amplifier (think for example a Krell or Jeff Rowland) for a punchy sound with plenty of dynamics without exceeding an irritation threshold. But it also works perfectly with a fine Class A/B amplifier such as the Accuphase P-7100 for a more vibrant and pleasant experience. Furthermore, the ATC SCM40 MK2 is easy to place and is not overkill in smaller rooms. Once connected to a suitable amplifier, listening to the ATC SCM40 MK2 is a special experience that never gets boring.
