Technology : The Chord DAVE is first and foremost a DA Converter. DAVE stands for "Digital to Analogue Veritas in Extrema's", or the best Chord could make. The Chord DAVE is an FPGA DA Converter, so it does not contain a conventional DA conversion chip. The conversion from Digital to Analogue happens in a DSP processor, the FPGA. Chord claims it is the most advanced DA converter in the world and that could well be true. The FPGA also provides digital volume control at a very high level, equivalent to for example the Bricasti M1SE. You can therefore connect a power amplifier directly to the Chord DAVE. The Chord DAVE also has an excellent headphone amplifier on board with a 6.3mm connection. The core of the Chord DAVE is of course the advanced DA conversion technology. Chord does not disappoint here. This Chord DAVE is one of the few DA Converters that can convert everything that exists in the digital audio field. The Chord DAVE converts all PCM and DSD signals up to 32Bit 768KHz (PCM) and DSD 512 (DSD). Not many DA Converters can do that. The construction of the Chord DAVE is also impressive, but also unconventional. The housing is made from a CNC milled piece of aluminium and contains the power supply internally, but the dimensions are small. So not a standard 43cm wide HIFI device, but a completely custom size. The Chord DAVE has analogue outputs on RCA and XLR, which can be used simultaneously.

Listening : The Chord DAVE is a top quality DA converter, that is immediately clear. The Chord DAVE sounds very open, fine, precise and dynamic. Details emerge that have never been heard before. The spatial image is also very strong. The level of detail is so great that you wonder where the Chord DAVE gets it from. The Chord DAVE sounds spectacular in itself, but it can be even better. Chord also makes the M-Scaler, which externally upsamples the incoming USB and SPDIF signals to dual DSD 512. This signal runs via 2 external BCN cables to the Chord DAVE. You use the Double BNC 1,2 inputs for this. This further increases the already enormous resolution of the Chord DAVE. The Chord DAVE is a DA Converter for enthusiasts and an audio system with very high resolution capability to benefit from this. Only then do the enormous qualities of the Chord DAVE become truly audible.
