Technical : The Sonus Faber Gravis 1 is a compact, sealed subwoofer specially designed for music systems. The Gravis 1 is engineered as a musical subwoofer, to extend the low-frequency response of your speakers downward. For this reason, it was necessary to build a ported-free subwoofer, with sophisticated control electronics to couple the subwoofer as optimally as possible to the main speakers. The upper crossover frequency should be adjustable low enough to ensure the subwoofer rolls off when the main speaker takes over. It is also important that the Gravis 1 can be connected to the speaker output of the amplifier. Not every amplifier has a line out to connect the subwoofer with a RCA cable. In many cases, it sounds even better if you use the speaker outputs to drive the Gravis 1. The bass character of the amplifier used is then carried to the subwoofer. The Gravis 1 has its own amplifier and draws only a minimal amount of power from the amplifier. Your amplifier and speakers will not notice it, but the blend with the main speakers is often superior. The Gravis 1 features a 210 mm long throw woofer and a 150 watt amplifier built-in. The woofer faces downward, which makes the Gravis 1 easy to place. The Gravis 1 from Sonus Faber is their smallest subwoofer, and is ideal for the compact speakers on the market, and small floor-standing speakers.

Listening : Actually, you should not hear a subwoofer. It should do nothing except when very deep tones appear in the music that the main speakers cannot reproduce. The Sonus Faber Gravis 1 does that excellently. The bass extension is substantial, and your speakers seem to have grown larger. The entire soundstage expands in all dimensions. Most importantly, however, the Sonus Faber Gravis 1 produces no coloration. Pure bass. Many subwoofers you can continuously hear working, and that is not the intention. Fine for a home theater setup, but not for a high-quality audio system. We recommend the Sonus Faber Gravis 1 as the ideal subwoofer for, for example, the Sonus Faber Olympica 1, the Sonetto 1 and 2, but other standmount speakers also benefit from the bass extension. For larger rooms, we recommend the Sonus Faber Gravis 2 subwoofer.
