Technical : The Sonus Faber Gravis 2 is a reasonably compact, sealed subwoofer with an active and a passive woofer. The Gravis 2 is designed as a musical subwoofer, to extend the low frequency range of your speakers downward. Therefore, it was necessary to build a ported subwoofer, and with sophisticated control electronics to couple the subwoofer as optimally as possible to the main speakers. The upper frequency must be set relatively low to ensure that the subwoofer rolls off when the main speaker takes over. It is also important that the Gravis 2 can be connected to the speaker output of the amplifier. Not every amplifier has a line out to connect the subwoofer with a long RCA cable. In many cases it even sounds better if you use the speaker outputs to drive the Gravis 2. The bass character of the amplifier used is thus carried over to the subwoofer. The Gravis 2 has its own amplifier, and takes only a minimal amount of power from the amplifier. Your amplifier and speakers will not notice it, but the blend with the main speakers is often better. The Gravis 2 has a 260 mm long throw woofer on the front and a 260 mm passive radiator on the bottom, and a 350 watt amplifier built in. The Gravis 2 from Sonus Faber is their mid-range subwoofer, and this is ideal for the compact speakers on the market, and small floor-standing speakers, but also the larger systems and rooms will benefit from the qualities of this subwoofer.

Listening : Actually, you should not hear a subwoofer. It should do nothing except when there are very deep tones in the music that the main speakers cannot produce. The Sonus Faber Gravis 2 does that excellently. The bass extension is substantial, and your speakers seem to have grown larger. The whole image grows in all dimensions. Most importantly, however, the Sonus Faber Gravis 2 produces no extraneous noise. Pure bass. Subwoofers often make themselves heard by exhibiting various annoying resonances, and they simply cannot be set deep enough. The Gravis 2 sounds somewhat deeper and smoother than the Gravis 1, and can absolutely deliver more pressure in the low end, even in larger rooms. Through the use of the passive radiator, the character of the Gravis 2 is somewhat rounder and more musical than that of the Gravis 1. We recommend the Sonus Faber Gravis 2 as the ideal subwoofer for, for example, the Sonus Faber Olympica 1, Olympica 2, the Sonetto 1 and 2, 3 and 5, but other stand-mount speakers also benefit from the bass extension. For very small rooms, we recommend the Sonus Faber Gravis 1 subwoofer.
