Optimal power supply begins with a properly installed power circuit in your home. It's simpler than it seems. All you need is a direct connection to your system, or close to it. This direct cable, preferably the Gigawatt LC-Y EVO cable, is connected to the safety switch. It will trip in the event of a short circuit. This is mandatory, because without this safety switch there is a risk of fire in your home. As a first upgrade you will need to replace the standard Automatic Switch or old-fashioned fuse with the Gigawatt G-C20A or G-C20A Dual. The G-C20A Single is the single version of the dual-pole G-C20AD. The intention is that only the Phase (Brown) goes through the switch. The Neutral (Blue) wire goes directly to the rail of the meter cabinet. The G-C20A has an OFC copper tip with polished silver contact, and is housed in a Bakelite enclosure.
Switches or Circuit Breakers
In audio circles there are many opinions when it comes to power, power switches and fuses. A standard switch, which is probably installed in your home, works fine for safety, but the contacts in such a switch do not account for very sensitive audio equipment. These switches can be quite "noisy", which has a negative effect on the sound quality of your system. Also, cheap switches have a non-optimal power path and poor connection terminals. Cheap switches are adequate for safety, but are unsuitable for pure HiFi and High End Audio installations.
Inrush Problems
Modern power amplifiers can draw a current spike when switched on that can be up to 10 or 20 times the rated value of the switch. This brief current surge can damage a normal switch, and its quality will gradually deteriorate. The new Gigawatt G-C20A is specially designed for this, and the quality of the connection remains optimal.
Fuses
Older homes often have old-fashioned fuse boxes with fuses. If you have a short circuit, the fuse blows and the wire melts. You will then need to replace the fuse. The major disadvantage of a fuse is that all current must pass through a tiny wire. The cross-section of the wire in a fuse is approximately 1/50mm. You read that correctly. So you're dealing with nice and heavy power cords, and at the base there is a wire that is at most 1/10 mm thick. If you use a couple of hundred watts, the thin wire already gets warm, which is detrimental to the speed of power supply. You can hear it. The dynamics change. If you use more power, the wire gets hot, and even the entire fuse gets hot. The sonic results get worse and worse. If you exceed the fuse rating, for example above 2300 watts with a 10 amp fuse, the wire melts through for safety reasons. Fuses don't have the "noisy" side effects of ordinary electronic switches, but they do have a strong dampening effect on your sound system. Fuses are definitely not the answer. Not even if the fuse wire is made of silver, gold, or assembled by the so-called "Virgin Angels in Moonlight". It's simply unsuitable.
Gigawatt G-C20A Single Circuit Breaker
The Gigawatt G-C20A Circuit Breaker is the latest single-pole electronic safety switch, specially made for Gigawatt by Carling Tech USA for use in the EU. The 20 Amp version cannot always be used in every home. The 16 Amp version can. Please check this before purchasing this switch. The enclosure of the Gigawatt G-C20A Single is made of Bakelite. This ensures that the contact surfaces of the switch, the silver-plated breakers, always lie 100% flat against each other. You can understand that if these contact surfaces are even 1/100mm skewed relative to each other, the contact is no longer optimal. The Gigawatt G-C20A Single is completely made of demagnetized and Cryo-treated material. The contact surfaces of the breakers are made of solid OFC copper, which is silver-plated and then polished. You can be assured that the Gigawatt G-C20A Single in closed condition truly allows all current to pass through unimpeded, without any side effects. The sonic difference with an ordinary or so-called audiophile switch is enormous. The Gigawatt G-C20A Single switch is officially approved in Europe and fits easily in your modern meter cabinet next to standard electronic switches, but not every electrician will install it, since officially both the Phase and Neutral must always be disconnected in case of a short circuit. The Gigawatt G-C20A Single allows 20A current to pass through continuously, which is 4600 watts, and will only disconnect the Phase contact if exceeded. This way your system continues to work optimally, and in the event of a short circuit, overload or other problem, the switch will open. You can restore the contact by switching the switch back to 1.
Listening
We are often asked, what sonic difference do you actually hear? When you replace your switch, preamp module, fuse with the Gigawatt G-C20A, everything improves. The dynamics become better and purer, the 3D image becomes larger, and you definitely hear more detail. Of course it's best if you not only replace the switch, but also the cable to your system, the power outlet, and if within your budget, a Gigawatt Power Filter, Power Prime or Power Conditioner.
