Description

Magico A3

ENG.

General: The Magico A3 is the first of the new Magico 3-way speaker series

Technical: The Magico A3 is a compact 3-way speaker in a price range that is new for Magico. The goal was to price the A3 at around $10,000 or approximately €13,000, but unfortunately that didn't work out. Building such a high-quality speaker simply proved impossible. The Magico A3 will cost €16,900.00 in the Netherlands. Our current 2 pairs are the last ones that can be sold at the old price of €13,500.00. A lot of money perhaps, but not for a Magico and certainly not for a speaker that is built so well and sounds so excellent as the A3. The A3 is another beautiful 3-way speaker and reasonably compact as well. The Magico A3 is made entirely of aircraft aluminum. The units are Magico's own units. First of all, the tweeter. That is a very fine Beryllium tweeter, which is also used in the S1 mk1 and S3 mk1. A tweeter that performs without the diamond coating of the S1 MK2 and S3 MM2. The midrange driver is a 6 inch Nano-Tec Graphene unit. The bass units are also Nano-Tec Graphene units. The Graphene units are among the best that Magico makes and this material is also found in the S1 MK2 and S3 MK2 and the more expensive M series also uses it. The crossover uses exclusively top quality components from Mundorf among others from Germany. The Magico A3 has a closed cabinet and therefore does not sound excessively heavy in the bass, but sounds incredibly well controlled and thus very pure. True deep bass from a compact enclosure. The Magico A3 is an incredibly beautifully built speaker and sonically it is a true Magico.

Listening: The A3 has just started playing in our listening room Studio 2, and it quickly becomes clear that this is a very special speaker. The comparison with the S1 MK2 immediately comes to mind. It is roughly the same size, but a 2-way, while the A3 is a 3-way speaker. As expected, it soon becomes clear that both speakers are cut from the same cloth. Both speakers are absolutely top-notch. The Magico A3 indeed sounds like a truly good 3-way speaker. The A3 sounds tight, smooth, very differentiated, and as if carved from one piece. The soundstage is very open and a large 3D bubble unfolds. The Magico A3 can also play quite loud. The Magico S1 MK2 is the absolute master when it comes to honesty, and this also sounds mercilessly tight and open, while the A3 is somewhat easier on the ear. The differences are small. We actually know no speakers that play as purely and precisely as the Magico A3, even in the unfortunately higher pricing of now. A Sonus Faber Serafino comes closest, and it certainly plays more dynamically than the Magico A3, but each system has its own strengths. It will be a matter of taste that will be decisive. We have the Magico A3 in-house for demo, and should you also like to compare it with the Sonus Faber Serafino, or the Magico S1 MK2, or another fine speaker, you are welcome.
