General : Flagship stereo power amplifier from Aavik Acoustics from Denmark. The Aavik P-880 is among the absolute references among stereo power amplifiers. Due to its completely different architecture, the Aavik P-880 is from another world compared to the already excellent P-X88 series power amplifiers from Aavik Acoustics.

Technology : The biggest difference between the P-880 and the P-X88 series is that the Aavik P-880 is a Class A amplifier while the P-X88 amplifiers are Class D amplifiers. However, the Aavik P-880 is not a typical Class A amplifier. With its robust 2 x 250 Watts at 8 Ohm and even 2 x 500 Watts at 4 Ohm, the Aavik P-880 is considerably more powerful than the average Class A amplifier. Aavik Acoustics has designed a circuit that keeps the bias spread constant at 0.63 V above the required current, regardless of where it is in the cycle. It doesn't matter how much current the power amplifier needs to perform, it always operates in Class A without wasting unnecessary energy. This also means the Aavik P-880 does not get as hot as most Class A amplifiers. Because the Aavik P-880 consumes and requires less power than a standard Class A amplifier, Aavik was able to use smaller capacitor banks for the 2 pairs of 8 transistors per channel. These capacitor banks are placed directly next to the transistors inside, so the current signal to the transistors doesn't have to travel a great distance. By keeping the signal path of the current signal as short as possible, this results in less noise in the signal. The power supply in the Aavik P-880 is also a special power supply that you won't often find in a Class A amplifier. It is a power supply consisting of 4 units of 500 Watt resonant mode power supplies. Where normal switching power supplies use square waves, the resonant mode power supplies in the Aavik P-880 are driven by sine waves. This results in much less generated noise, which always benefits sound quality. And because this power supply is used, the Aavik P-880 is more dynamic, more powerful and faster in its reproduction compared to more traditional Class A amplifiers that use linear power supplies. Whether you play loudly or softly, noise and distortion remain at an extremely low level. Additionally, Aavik Acoustics also uses Tesla Coil Technology and 3rd generation Dither Technology from sister brand Ansuz Acoustics. The Tesla Coils are an effective way of noise and induction reduction, and the Dither Technology provides amplification of the music signal. Chassis : The chassis of the Aavik P-880 is also something very special. The design comes largely from the founder of Gryphon Audio, Flemming Rasmussen, this fact combined with the pursuit of optimal mechanical stability and resonance control by designer Michael Børresen results in a beautiful design using unique materials to achieve the best musical properties from the Aavik P-880 chassis. Starting with the base plate, this is a sturdy sandwich design with a solid Titanium plate on the underside, on top of that a solid compact laminate plate and on top of that again a solid copper plate. The Aavik P-880 comes standard with 4 pieces of Ansuz Darkz Z3W decouplers which are placed under the base plate. The Ansuz Darkz Z3W are 3-layer decouplers with discs made of solid Zirconium with Hafnium. The decoupling between the 3 discs is done by solid Tungsten balls. This is by far the most optimal way of decoupling which results in a much more dynamic, lively and natural reproduction. Back to the Aavik P-880 chassis. The entire interior of the Aavik P-880 is solid copper which has better musical properties compared to aluminum. The front features a large white dot display with a white Aavik Acoustics logo next to it. This is a large display but it looks calm and is easy to read from almost any distance. The display can be adjusted to 10/40/780/100% brightness, but of course the display is also fully dimmable for those who prefer not to look at displays

Sound : The Aavik P-880 has a sound from another world. Where the Aavik P-X88 amplifiers already sound dynamic and natural, the P-880 takes it to another level. What stands out is the ease with which the Aavik P-880 plays, at any volume, connected to any speaker. The spatial imaging is lively, extremely detailed but above all extremely musical and addictive.
