General: The Aavik P-288 is the latest generation stereo power amplifier from the Danish brand Aavik Acoustics, which is part of Audio Group Denmark along with Ansuz Acoustics, Børresen Acoustics and Axxess. The Aavik P-288 has been redesigned in many respects compared to its predecessor, the P-280. The chassis has been completely redesigned, now made from different materials and the design now comes from Flemming Rasmussen (Gryphon Audio founder and designer). The Aavik P-288 is the model above the P-188 and the model below the P-588.

Chassis: The new chassis of the Aavik P-X88 series is very thoughtfully designed and engineered, with solid construction and refined finishing throughout. This is due to Audio Group Denmark's endless attention to researching and using different materials for optimal sound quality. The electronics in your audio device is one thing, the chassis is another. The chassis of your device also contributes to a certain sonic character. Aavik Acoustics initially made the chassis of its first amplifiers from solid aluminum; after considerable testing and listening, they discovered that a more natural composite chassis provided a more natural sound. This led to the P-280 and P-580 chassis (the P-580 also uses a titanium cross on the top plate and copper internal work). Now the chassis of the Aavik P-288, based on Aavik Acoustics' flagship models, the 880-series, is made of solid copper side plates and a top and bottom plate with a sandwich design consisting of a solid copper plate, a compact laminate plate and a stainless steel plate. The feel and look are now even more premium, and this new chassis has optimal resonance properties. The design is clearly derived from the stunning 880-series and the overall appearance is very sleek and modern. What has been retained is the very readable and dimmable red dot display. Large but understated in appearance. New is the absence of buttons, which are now touchscreen buttons on the display, and new is the Aavik Acoustics logo on the front, which is also dimmable along with the rest of the display. Also new are the large solid feet with Ansuz Darkz Feet integrated, which can be placed on Ansuz Darkz decouplers. A large part of this foot overlaps the Ansuz Darkz decoupler, reducing the color contrast between the amplifier and the Ansuz Darkz underneath (for example, the Ansuz Darkz S2T is made of polished stainless steel while the Aavik chassis is black). Finally, the remote control has also been redesigned; these are now the same beautiful and practical high-gloss remotes supplied with the 880-series, which completes the feel and look perfectly.

Technology: The highly advanced technology in Aavik amplifiers is unique. The Aavik P-288 uses the latest Pascal amplifier generation. This newest generation UMAC™ amplification can switch even faster and generates even less noise than previous generations. This means less filtering is required and the output impedance is lower, allowing the amplifier to have even greater control over the connected speakers. The Aavik P-288 delivers 2 x 300 Watts at 8 Ohm and even 2 x 600 Watts at 4 Ohm. This means the Aavik P-288 can drive practically anything, from massive Infinity's or B&W's and Wilson Audio to the largest models of Magnepan, Analysis Audio and other planar speakers. The resonant mode power supply is very generously dimensioned and always calculated for its task. The technical design is very advanced and uses various techniques from sister brand Ansuz Acoustics. For example, the Aavik P-288 features comprehensive Noise and Impedance Reduction via Ansuz Tesla Coil and Dither Technology. The Aavik P-288 features 72 Active Tesla Coils, and 187 Active Square Tesla Coils. These Tesla Coils eliminate noise from the music signal and reduce impedance, ensuring a freer flow of the music signal from point A to point B. These Tesla Coils are supported by 7 Analog Dither Circuitry units of the latest (3rd) generation. The Aavik P-288 also contains 5 Gold Anti Aerial Resonance Coils. The power consumption of the Aavik P-288 is very favorable. In standby mode, the Aavik P-288 consumes only 1 Watt, and in music mode, consumption is < 30 Watts idle.

Sound: Due to its greater amount of noise cancelling, the Aavik P-288 has a quieter and more organic sound than the Aavik P-188. Small details become more apparent and the music is simply even more interesting to listen to. The Aavik P-288 is also a clear step forward compared to the P-280. The resolution of the new X88 equipment from Aavik has improved significantly. The music is cleaner, the soundstage is tighter, quieter and more organized. There is more liveliness in the sound, and the P-X88 amplifiers sound more neutral, making them sound more 'live' than their predecessors. The bass is deeper and more rhythmic and control over the speakers is optimal. The sound of the Aavik P-288 is neutral, dynamic and open, yet in a way that remains natural and doesn't cause listening fatigue. The distinction between foreground and background in the recording is clearly discernible and there is excellent overview when much is happening in the recording. Equally important is the harmony in which everything that is individually easy to follow works together. This means you not only hear exactly what happens in the recording, but it remains musical and enjoyable to listen to without feeling like the recording is being 'dissected'. In short, the Aavik P-288 simply sounds very musical. Relaxed and an enormous 3D bubble. The space in which the performers play is very clearly audible and the atmosphere is well conveyed to the listener. The Aavik P-288 sounds tight and dynamic and reveals everything when called upon, but there is also a certain calm & comfort to the sound that allows you to play quieter intimate music and creates a pleasant emotional transfer. The sound is thus excellently balanced and the overall picture simply works. Dynamically, the Aavik P-288 goes further than most Class A & A/B amplifiers, but that is not ultimately what it's all about. It's about sound quality and musicality, and to what extent an amplifier is able to convey emotions. And conveying the music in the way it was intended is where Aavik amplifiers excel. This Aavik P-288 is pure emotion.

Conclusion: The Aavik Acoustics P-288 is a unique power amplifier with generous output power and fantastic sound quality. Operation is very simple and refined, and the display is readable from great distances without being intrusive.

Other Aavik Acoustics Amplifiers in the P-X88 Series: The other amplifiers in the P-X88 Series from Aavik Acoustics, the P-188 and P-588, are built on the same principle.
